About Bryant University

Located in Smithfield, Rhode Island, Bryant University is a private university that was established in 1863. It is a non-profit, four-year school that offers a variety of courses in business and humanities. 

The university campus is located on a 1.73 km2 plot.

Originally named Bryant and Stratton National Business College, Bryant University was founded as part of a national chain of private coeducational business colleges. Until August 2004 it was formerly called Bryant College. The University was accredited by the New England Commission on Higher Education (NECHE) in 1964.

History

Bryant University was established in 1863 as a branch of a national school that originally taught accountancy and business communication methods. It is named after the founding father John Collins Bryant and Henry Beadman Bryant. This distinct college chain is currently known as Bryant & Stratton College. The college grew to 40 locations altogether, including the campus in Providence, R.I., in 1863, and was managed by a Rhode Island accountant Ezra Mason. 

In 1867, William Warner purchased the college and expanded the curriculum to include courses in the arts, humanities, and sciences including philosophy, history, languages, photography, sculpture, engineering, higher mathematics, hydraulics, and mechanics. Maximilian Berlitz was responsible for languages ​​and later built his empire of Berlitz schools. In 1916, the college was bought by Harry Loeb Jacobs and merged with the Rhode Island Commercial School, granting bachelor of commercial science and bachelor of accounting degrees.

Bryant went non-profit in 1949 and offered his first master’s program in 1969. In 1970, Bryant College broke ground on the 220-acre estate in Smithfield, RI, donated by Earl Tupper, president of Tupperware Corporation. In 1971, the college moved from Providence, RI, to the $17.5 million campuses in Smithfield, Rhode Island, and now occupies 428 acres and houses 79 percent of Bryant undergraduates.

Academics

Bryant University has an enrollment of 3,255 undergraduate students. Most class sizes are between 25 and 35 students. The smaller rooms are Language classes, Honors courses, and laboratories. Tuition and fees are $47,782. 99% of Bryant graduates were working or in graduate school under 6 months of graduation.

The university has two colleges, the College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Business. Each of these colleges offers both bachelor’s and master’s degrees, with the majority of students enrolled in the business college. AACSB International – The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, accredited by the College of Business. The university is also a member of CUIBE, a consortium of nationally recognized international business programs.

All students in a business major are expected to complete one of the 27 liberal arts minors. Students on the Bachelor of Science in International Business course must complete a language minor. For students majoring in the college of arts and science, a business minor is required.

1. George E. Bello Center for Information and Technology

Gwathmey Siegel & Associates Architects, a firm in New York City that has been acknowledged nationally for its design of the Science, Industry, & Business Library (SIBL) for the New York Public Library, designed the George E. 2. Unit structure

The unit structure is the center of Bryant’s scholarly work. It currently houses almost all classrooms, most faculties and administrative offices, and numerous academic resources.

3. John H. Chafee Center for International Business

The building was built in honor of the late Senator John Chafee of Rhode Island. The center serves the local business community and provides practical opportunities for students to find out more about global affairs. The Koffler Center also hosts the university’s television and radio stations. WMF occupies most of the ground floor and shares space with the television/editing studio.

The Bulldog Strength & Conditioning Center is utilized by students who belong to the Bulldog Division I and club sports athletic teams. It is a 10,000-square-foot building.

8. Ronald K. and Kati C. Machtley Interfaith Center

The interfaith center opened at the start of the 2009–2010 academic year and was named by the board of trustees in honor of President Ronald K. Machtley and his wife Kati C. Machtley on October 9, 2010. 

The center is an 11,000-square-foot (1,000 m2) non-denominational place of worship and reflection for all members of the campus community. It is located between Bryant Center and the George E. Bello Center for Information and Technology and was built to replace the previous chapel located in the Bryant Center.

1. Salmanson Dining Hall

The Salmanson Dining Hall named in honor of Leonard I. Salmanson in 1973 is located in the unit structure. Salmanson is said to have made one of the largest donations the school has ever received. He was awarded an honorary degree of Doctor of Science in Business Administration in 1972 by the university and became a Trustee in 1974.

2. Suite Village

The Suite Village is a compilation of fourteen halls of residence, thirteen of which (Charlestown, Richmond, Kilcup, Westerly, Hopkinton, Exeter, Coventry, Scituate, Tiverton, Providence, Jamestown, Cumberland, and Lincoln) accommodate 90 students. The last and most recent, Hall 17 (Newport House), is home to around 200 students. Each suite consists of three double bedrooms, a lounge, and an en suite bathroom with several cabins and showers. Each of the four floors has four suites, each suite being separated according to gender.

Athletics

In 2012, Bryant University was reclassified as NCAA Division I. The University has 22 intercollegiate collegiate athletic programs and participates in the NCAA Division I as a member of the Northeast Conference. Sports teams are called the Bulldogs.
