Case Western Reserve University (CWRU ) is a private research university founded in 1826 and located in Cleveland, Ohio. It was initially created in 1967 through the federation of two long-standing contiguous institutions: Western Reserve University, and Case Institute of Technology that had been neighbors for 81 years. 

The university campus size is 267 acres, 5 miles (8 km) east of downtown Cleveland, adjacent to the historic Wade Park District in University Circle. There are a number of programs taught in conjunction with nearby institutions, like the Cleveland Institute of Music, the Cleveland Hearing & Speech Center, the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Cleveland Institute of Art, the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, the Western Reserve Historical Society, Cleveland Botanical Garden, and the Cleveland Play House.

CWRU is currently ranked 40th in the U.S. and 155th among global universities. In 2019, it was 42nd in the American “national universities” category and 152nd in the “global universities” category in 2019. In 2018, it was ranked 37th and 146th respectively by the U.S. News & World Report. There is a total undergraduate enrollment of 5,150 students and 6,674 postgraduate and professional students. Case Western Reserve University aims to students on the path to personal, intellectual, and professional success. considerations are based on the applicant’s academic background, life experiences, and interests. There are also no minimum test score or GPA range to gauge the potential for admission.

Prior to high school graduation, first-year graduate students are required to complete a minimum of:

  • 4 years of English
  • 3 years of math
  • 3 years of science (2 must be laboratory science)
  • 3 years of social studies
  • 2 years of foreign language

For engineering or the sciences applicants, an additional year of math and laboratory science is recommended. 

First-year applicants are also required to submit either the SAT or ACT, despite that the writing section of the ACT and the essay section of the SAT are not compulsory. Prospective students can submit self-reported scores by completing the form on their applicant portal while enrolling students will confirm their testing with official score reports. 

SAT Scores (middle 50%)

  • Composite    1350–1490
  • Evidence-based reading and writing   650–730
  • Math    700–790

ACT Scores (middle 50%)

  • Composite (super score)    30–34
  • Math    29–34
  • English    31–35

All first-year students must complete an essay via the Common or Coalition Application. The essay should entail details of who you are to the admission staff. Case Western Reserve University expects students to personalize their admission essays and be honest about it. 


The admission of new graduate students into Case Western Reserve University is determined by each program within the School of Graduate Studies. Final decisions are posted by the admission staff and can be viewed by logging in to the online application system

Graduate applicants are not required to send official test scores during the application process. Official TOEFL or GRE test scores are to be sent through ETS using the institutional code of 1105 for Case Western Reserve University if accepted while IELTS scores can be verified online.

Official transcripts during the application process are not required to be sent by the applicant. They must come directly from the institution either mailed in a sealed envelope or sent electronically for it to be accepted. 

Unofficial copies of their transcripts as well must be uploaded onto the application for review purposes.

Case Western Reserve University provides a variety of merit scholarships and need-based aid. International First-year students or transfer students are automatically evaluated for several scholarships.

Louis Stokes Congressional Black Caucus Foundation Scholarship

This is a full-tuition scholarship (renewable for up to five years) that aims to help economically and educationally disadvantaged students attain education at CWRU. Also included in this Case Western Reserve scholarship is a grant of up to $2,500 for computer and book purchases, and assistance securing a paid summer internship. It’s open to all first-year students and transfers students from community colleges.


Andrew and Eleanor Squire Scholarship

This is a  four-year, full-tuition scholarship open to first-year applicants in the arts; humanities; management; accountancy; and natural, social, and behavioral sciences.

It was originally established by university trustee Andrew Squire and his wife, Eleanor. 


FIRST Scholarship

FIRST Scholarships are available for first-year applicants who are seniors in high school and participated at least one full season on a FIRST Robotics Competition. A FIRST Tech Challenge team can apply for one of two scholarships of $10,000 (renewable up to $40,000 over four years with a 3.0 GPA).


A.W. Smith Innovation Scholarship

This Case Western Reserve scholarship is made up of two scholarships in the amount of tuition awarded to students who have shown exceptional achievement in hands-on engineering or science through a successful project. The scholarship is open to first-year applicants in engineering, the physical sciences, and mathematics
