The Commonwealth Scholarship is an international program under which Commonwealth governments offer scholarships and fellowships to citizens of other Commonwealth countries. The plan was originally proposed in Montreal on 1 September 1958. It was then established in 1959, at the first Conference of Commonwealth Education Ministers (CCEM) held in Oxford, Great Britain. 

The Commonwealth Scholarships scheme is aimed at students from across the Commonwealth who are not able to afford to study in the UK. The scheme helps to support future innovators and leaders by funding postgraduate studies in a range of different study formats. Since its establishment, over 25,000 individuals have received awards, hosted by over twenty countries.

Who can apply? 

To apply for a Commonwealth Scholarship, you must be a permanent resident or citizen of a Commonwealth country. If you are a refugee or British-protected person, you will still be eligible. 

An undergraduate honors degree of at least upper second class (2:1) is also required. You will need an appropriate master’s degree too if you wish to study for a Ph.D. and must be unable to afford to study in the UK without the scholarship.
