Commonwealth Scholarships

The Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan is one of the largest and prestigious international scholarship plans in the world. Since it was established in 1959, about 35,000 individuals have received a scholarship to the Commonwealth or fellowship – 27,500 of them were funded by the UK government, through the United Kingdom Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (CSC).

CSC also awards over 750 postgraduate scholarships and scholarships professional development of Commonwealth citizens every year. The Secretariat is provided by the Association of Commonwealth Universities, based in London, overseas services are provided by the British Council.

Commonwealth Split-site Scholarships

Commonwealth Split-site Scholarships are for Ph.D. candidates from low and middle-income Commonwealth countries, to spend up to 12 months at a UK university as part of their doctoral studies in their home country. Funded by the UK Department for International Development (DFID), However, Commonwealth Split-site Scholarships enable talented and motivated individuals to gain the knowledge and skills required for sustainable development, and are aimed at those who could not otherwise afford to study in the UK.

Its purpose is to widen access to UK equipment and expertise for high-quality doctoral candidates from low and middle-income Commonwealth countries and to contribute to UK and Commonwealth higher education and research through collaboration and partnerships.

High-quality graduates whose proposed research has a developmental focus and who have the potential to become influential teachers or researchers in their home countries are also intended beneficiaries.

Commonwealth Split-site Scholarships are offered under six development themes:

Science and technology for development

Scholarship, which can be in any area of science or technology (including, in order), for example, agriculture, veterinary medicine or forestry), will develop knowledge and/or skills directly related to the specific needs of a low- or middle-income country. Whenever possible, applications should state the expressed national or local priority.

Strengthening health systems and capacity

The scholarship will develop knowledge and/or skills that will improve health provision or outcomes for disadvantaged groups in low and middle-income countries. A range of approaches could be adopted, such as training staff to fill critical shortage areas; establishing better systems, processes, or management; health promotion and improving understanding of non-take up; or developing new treatments.

Promoting global prosperity

This scholarship supports economic prosperity in low and middle-income countries. The knowledge and/or skills gained could lead to, for example, enhanced trade capacity; improved economic understanding or decision-making by business or government; new products and services; or long-term capacity building, through the development of entrepreneurial skills, for instance.

Strengthening global peace, security, and governance

The scholarship will develop knowledge and/or skills that will promote peace and

National, regional or international security. The approaches can be multiple

Used, such as promote open and transparent management; improve each other

Understanding within and between communities; or building systems that reduce

Potential conflict or promote a solution.

Strengthening resilience and response to crises

The scholarship will develop knowledge and/or skills that will help low and medium countries adapt to changing contexts, withstand sudden shocks or increase the ability to preserve the continuity of operations after such events. This could apply to a wide range of threats, including natural and physical disasters; long-term threats such as climate change; interruptions in the supply of key resources; or sudden economic or technological disruption.

Access, inclusion, and opportunity

The scholarship will develop knowledge and/or skills that will promote opportunity amongst historically disadvantaged groups in low and middle-income countries. This could be through, for example, expanding educational opportunities; conducting community outreach; enhancing access to decision-making, or increasing understanding of the barriers faced. A range of disadvantages can be addressed – including social, economic, gender, ethnic, regional, or political – provided that the need is clearly stated.

HOST NATIONALITY

The scholarship is hosted in the UK.

ELIGIBLE NATIONALITY

The scholarship is made available for low and middle-income countries.

SCHOLARSHIP WORTH

This scholarship provides:

  • Approved airfare from your home country to the UK and return at the end of your award (the CSC will not reimburse the cost of fares for dependants, nor the cost of journeys made before your award is confirmed)
  • Approved tuition fees
  • Stipend (living allowance) at the rate of £1,110 per month, or £1,362 per month for those at universities in the London metropolitan area (rates quoted at 2022 levels)
  •  Warm clothing allowance, where applicable
  •  Study travel grant towards the cost of study-related travel within the UK or overseas
  •  If you are widowed, divorced, or a single parent, child allowance of £476 per month for the first child, and £117 per month for the second and third child under the age of 16, if you are accompanied by your children and them are living with you at the same address in the UK (rates quoted at 2020 levels)
  • If you declare a disability, a full assessment of your needs and eligibility for additional financial support will be offered by the CSC

ELIGIBILITY

To apply for these scholarships, applicants must:

  • Be a citizen of or have been granted refugees status by an eligible Commonwealth country, or be a British Protected Person
  • Be permanently resident in an eligible Commonwealth country
  • Be registered for a Ph.D. at a university in an eligible Commonwealth country by the time their scholarship is confirmed (September 2020)
  • Ensure that an institutional or departmental link exists between their home university and their proposed UK university. This link must be greater than simply a collaboration between individuals — see ‘Tenure and placement’ on page 4 for further details on the ‘Terms and conditions’ pdf file available at the official link. Both supervisors must provide a supporting statement which includes details of the link in order for candidates’ application to be eligible
  • Be available to start their academic studies in the UK by the start of the UK academic year in September/October 2022
  • By October 2022, hold a first degree of at least upper second class (2:1) honors standard, or a second class degree (2:2) and relevant postgraduate qualification (usually a Master’s degree)
  • Have provided all supporting documentation in the required format
  •  Be unable to afford to study in the UK without this scholarship

How To Apply for the commonwealth Split-site Scholarship

You should apply to study at a UK university which has a part funding agreement with the CSC. Part funding agreements are at the discretion of individual universities.

You must make your application directly to the CSC using CSC’s online application system. The CSC will not accept any applications that are not submitted via the online application system.

All applications, including must be submitted by 4:00 PM (UTC) on November 6, at the latest.

You are advised to complete and submit your application as soon as possible, as the online application system will be very busy in the days leading up to the application deadline.
