Drake University Overview

Drake University is a private university in Des Moines, Iowa, United States. The institution offers undergraduate and graduate programs. They also offer professional programs in business, law, and pharmacy. Historically, Drake’s Law School is one of the oldest law schools in the United States of America. Drake Scholarships in 2022-2023: How To Apply

Basically, first-year students are eligible to apply for any of the 9 kinds of Drake Scholarships in the 2022-2023 academic session;

  • Presidential Scholarships.
  • National Alumni Scholarships.
  • Fine Arts Scholarships.
  • Engaged Citizen Corps.
  • Legacy Awards.
  • Athletic Scholarships.
  • National Merit Scholarships.
  • School of Journalism & Mass Communication Scholarships.
  • Actuarial Science Scholarships.

Intertwined are the scholarship application requirements and eligibility.

Presidential Scholarships

Award offered :$20,000 to $23,000 per year.

The Presidential Scholarship is one of the prestigious scholarships awarded to Drake students. All prospective students that have applied and are admitted by the stated deadline of March 1 are automatically considered for this scholarship. Recipients of these tuition scholarships are considered and chosen based on a complete formal assessment of their applications.
Guess what? All Drake Scholarships under the presidential awards are renewable up to four years or until a Bachelor’s Degree is acquired. Also, academic excellence and the average grade point must be maintained.

National Alumni Scholarships

Alumni Grants Award: $3,000

This award is presented by the alumni body to students with excellent academic performance. Students are invited to participate in this program and applicants do not have to be related to Drake alumni to be eligible for this award. The National Alumni Scholarship process is competitive and awards are given through the National Alumni Scholarship program.
The National Alumni Scholarship awards the following annually:
• 2 full Ride alumni scholarships (school fees, room, and board).
• 3 full Tuition fees

The 2 full-ride alumni scholarships include;

George Carpenter Scholarships.

All students who fulfill the qualifications of these scholarships are eligible to participate in one of the two National Alumni Scholarships and will receive a $3,000 Trustee Scholarship.

Alumni and George Carpenter Scholarship

Alumni and George Carpenter Scholarships supersede both the Presidential Scholarship and the Trustee Scholarship. All scholarships are renewable for three additional years if the recipient enrolls in a minimum of 12 credits each term and maintains the required minimum cumulative grade point average on a 4.0 scale ranging from 2.0 to 3.0.

Note: The 2022 National Alumni Scholarship Application will open in Fall 2022.

Fine Arts Scholarships

These scholarships are based completely on talent. Fine Arts Scholarships are available to selected students who display exceptional talent in art and design, music, or theatre arts and who are seeking a fine arts degree. Information and applications for these scholarships are available from each of Drake’s fine arts departments (art, music, and theatre arts ).

Engaged Citizen Corps

Award: $3,000

The Engaged Citizen Corps is designed to encourage first-year student engagement in community service and social justice work while integrating these issues into their academic study and coursework.
As a member, you will commit to weekly service-learning hours in the community, establish strong connections with a wide range of organizations and working professionals, gain skills for your career, meet friends with similar passions, strengthen the community, and connect your community experiences with your academic pursuits.

All members accepted into the Corps will receive, at minimum, $3,000 in scholarships and aid. To apply, complete the Engaged Citizen Corps application on the portal after gaining admission into Drake University.

Legacy Awards

Award: $2,500

Drake University Legacy Awards honor degree-seeking undergraduate students who are related by birth to Drake’s graduates.
The $2,500 annual award (one award per student) is not based on financial need but must be applied only to the cost of tuition and is renewable for up to eight full-time semesters. No separate application is required.

Athletic Scholarships

NCAA Division I Athletic Scholarships
Award: $5,000

Division, I Athletic Scholarships are offered to outstanding athletes in both men’s and women’s sports. Men’s scholarships are awarded in basketball, soccer, track and field, cross-country, golf, and tennis. Women’s scholarships are available in basketball, track, and field, cross-country, golf, soccer, volleyball, softball, tennis, and rowing.

National Merit Scholarships

Award offered :$1,000 to $2,000 per year

National Merit Scholarships is a philanthropist scholarship that ranges from $1,000 per year for students with no financial need to $2,000 per year for students who demonstrate financial need.
First-year students who rank as National Merit finalists and who have indicated Drake University as their first choice institution may be considered for Drake scholarships.

School of Journalism and Mass Communication Scholarships

This scholarship is from Katharine Faber Futch, Class of 1940, to recognize outstanding achievement and potential incoming first-year students. This scholarship award is renewed for any student who demonstrates professionalism, intelligence, and integrity. It is worthy of note that the scholarship is renewed annually so long as the student maintains a 3.25 GPA or higher.

Drake University Futch Scholarship Requirements

The recipient of the Futch scholarship must be:

a. A new first-year student at Drake University with a major in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication.

b. A student who demonstrates academic excellence with a high CGPA of 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale (or the equivalent).

c. A student whose accomplishments must demonstrate the promise to become one of SJMC’s outstanding students.

d. A student with demonstrated financial need.

Actuarial Science Scholarships

Award:$3,500 per year.

The scholarship is renewable for the sophomore year provided the student has at least a 3.0 GPA and continues to major in actuarial science or in one of the joint programs that include actuarial science.

Actuarial Science Scholarship Requirements

The recipient of the Actuarial Science Scholarships must be:

  • An entering first-year student at Drake University with a declared major in actuarial science.
  • A student who possesses evidence of exceptional academic performance.
  • A student with demonstrated financial need.
