About Elon University
Elon University is a private university founded in 1889 as Elon College in Elon, North Carolina, United States. It is organized into six schools, offering bachelor’s degrees, master’s degrees, or professional doctorate degrees.
Located in North Carolina’s Piedmont region, Elon is built on a 656-acre (265 ha) suburban campus between the cities of Raleigh and Greensboro. Less than twenty percent of Elon’s undergraduates are North Carolina natives. Elon’s intercollegiate athletic teams are members of the Colonial Athletic Association and compete in NCAA Division I athletics.
History
Elon College was founded by the Christian Connection and the North Carolina legislature issued the charter for Elon College in 1889. The first president was William S. Long, and the original student body was 76 students. In 1923, a fire broke out and most of the campus was destroyed, including classrooms, school records, the library, and the chapel. The Board of Trustees voted to rebuild as soon as possible. The bedrock of Elon’s campus comprises most of the buildings erected in the years following the fire.
Most North Carolina residents enrolled in Elon. In the mid-1970s, Elon began to enroll lots of students from the mid-Atlantic states and began to improve its admission standards. By the start of the 21st century, 68 percent of Elon’s students were out-of-state students and they had to meet high academic standards to be accepted. Elon became a selective university. In 2013, 82% of incoming students came from out of state. Elon’s transformation was George Keller of the University of Pennsylvania subject of an academic study titled Transforming a College: The Story of a Little Known College’s Strategic Climb to National Distinction. Johns Hopkins University published a study that showed how Elon was transformed from a regional religious college to a selective, recognized university in the US.
Elon’s mission statement “embraces the vision of its founders on an academic community that transforms the mind, body, and spirit, freedom of thought and liberty of conscience,” and focuses its commitment to “develop a rich intellectual community known by student engagement with a faculty committed to excellent teaching and scholarly accomplishment.
On October 9, 2017, Dr. Constance “Connie” Ledoux Book was elected by the Elon Board of Trustees as the ninth president of the university.
