Google Africa Developers Scholarship Program

The Google Africa Developers scholarship is a scholarship program that is run by Google Inc. The scholarship aims at providing young students and developers with an opportunity to get involved with Google and the global technology industry.

The Google Africa Developers scholarship program focuses on the emerging digital world as well as creating an even opportunity for Africa. This means that the scholarship looks to reward students who are keen on programming as an incentive as well as an opportunity for them to develop. This, therefore, gives extra room for African developers in the global industry.

Since its inception, the Google Africa Developer Scholarship program has sponsored over 40,000 emerging/aspiring developers in Africa. These young developers are to be set up to learn skills with Pluralsight Skills. Andela Learning Community also supports the scholarship program.

Beneficiaries receive free but limited access to selected courses from Pluralsight Skills. Pluralsight Skills provide the students with courses that focus on one of three areas of interest for Google. These courses/areas of interest include Associate Android Developer, Google Cloud Engineering, as well as Mobile Web Specialist. And upon completion of these courses, successful candidates receive their Google certification. This certification qualifies them for several developer roles and could as well serve as a foundation for their startups.

The Google Africa Developer scholarship has two phases for the program.

Phase 1

The phase 1 stage of this program aims to ground the student’s preexisting knowledge in his/her selected field. Here, the student gets field-specific skills training. Then at the end of this phase, the student undergoes an evaluation exercise. This is to determine the student’s proficiency in his/her selected field.

Phase 2

Upon completion of the first stage, students may progress to the next stage. In this stage, the students will have more access to even more in-field content. These contents are to give room for the student to be highly creative. Students will have to use their preexisting knowledge to tackle problems and provide simple solutions.

Both phases of the program help students to gain access to excellent Pluralsight Skills courses as well as mentoring from the Andela Learning Community.

Eligibility and Requirements

Eligibility for this scholarship is pretty direct. All you have to do is to

  1. Ensure you are an African, living in an African country.
  2. Be 18 years and above.
  3. Have the required skill set. Prior/background knowledge is key. You must already have the foundation knowledge. Google only wants to help bring opportunities to you.

The requirements for the Google Africa Developer scholarship program are simple. All that you, as an applicant, genuinely need is the desire to be a developer. This program is centered around young and emerging developers, giving them professional grooming. Therefore, only developers are eligible for this scholarship.

The goal of this scholarship is to provide tutorship and guidance for young programmers to enable them to become experts. Consequently, the absence of programming knowledge disqualifies you from this program.

In a statement, Google says this program aims to “Help bridge the developer skills and opportunities gap in Africa by providing African developers with access to high equality and Cloud platforms.”
