About Hankamer School of Business

Hankamer Business School is a private research university chartered in 1845 by the Republic of Texas in Waco, Texas. It was formerly known as Baylor University and was renamed Hankamer after Earl Hankamer, a board member, donated $500,000 toward the construction of the new building in the university. 

Hankamer is one of the first educational institutions in the United States and the oldest operating university in Texas. The university’s first Business Administration bachelor’s degree program was offered in 1924. Baylor’s Hankamer School of Business building was built in 1960, to educate twenty-first-century leaders. It was built to be a community among students outside the classroom. Paul L. Foster Campus’s environment is reflective of the 21st-century workplace while honoring Baylor’s values, rich heritage, and traditions. 

Hankamer business school is an “R1: Doctoral University. It is located on the 1,000-acre Baylor University campus at Brazos River banks, in Waco. Hankamer Scholars

The Hankamer Scholars program is for exceptional students who want more opportunities in their programs with early access to major and upper-level courses. Participating students will show high ACT/SAT scores, outstanding academic achievement, active involvement in extra-curricular activities,  and impressive leadership skills. The accelerated program provides more space in the BBA degree plan for participants to enroll in many business majors, include minors outside the Business School,  complete semester abroad programs, pre-professional educational goals (i.e. Pre-Med), add secondary major programs, or graduate early.

Military programs

Before the Civil War, the University has a strong history of military service. Currently, there are Army and Air Force ROTC for students. Hankamer graduates have served in many major military battles in Texas. In 1888, formal military instruction started on campus.

Famous military graduates of the university include John Riley Kane, and  Andrew Jackson Lummus, Jr. ohn flew 43 combat missions for a total of 250 combat hours in Africa, Europe, and the Middle East. he was dubbed “Killer Kane” because of his daring operations by German intelligence.  He received a medal of honor for his service. Andrew died during World War II, at the Battle of Iwo Jima and also received the Medal of Honor for his service.

In July 1948, Baylor University and the Air Force partnered to create the Air Force ROTC Detachment 810 – the first detachment ever created. In 2008, the Detachment was awarded the Air Force ROTC Right Of Line Award as the best large detachment in the US. The High Flight Award was additionally awarded to the unit, and it was recognized as one of the top four detachments in the nation.  In 1996, 2003, and 2008, It was named the best in the AFROTC Southwest Region.

There are also several postgraduate and professional health sciences programs in partnership with the Army Medical Department. The headquarters of the Army Medical Department is in San Antonio. Programs offered include MHA, the Doctor of Physical Therapy, the United States Army Graduate Program in Nursing Anesthesia (USAGPAN), and MHA/MBA (joint program).

Research and endowment

In 2005, the university was asked to join the collaboration of the Collider Detector at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Batavia, Illinois. The project is one of the largest experimental physics collaborations in the world. The following year, the university was classified as a “Research University”. In 2021, the university became an “R1: Doctoral universities.

In October 2009, state, county, organizations, city governments, and higher educational institutions in Central Texas announced the creation of the park’s first project, the Central Texas Technology, and Research Park, the Baylor Research and Innovation Collaborative, all to be housed in Waco former General Tire facility on South Loop Drive. The state of Texas and Baylor University funded the effort. A facility was donated by Clifton Robinson (a member of Baylor’s Board of Regents) to the university to support the research collaboration.

Many previous and present members of Baylor faculty are or were popular proponents of intelligent design, especially Christian philosopher Francis Beckwith, philosopher William Dembski, and Robert J. Marks II, an electrical engineer.

In 2007, the university’s endowment was more than $1 billion and on December 31, 2007, it reached $1,055,478,000. During the economic crisis of 2008, Lori Fogleman, a spokesperson of Baylor, reported that Baylor’s endowment increased by 5.1% by the year ending June 30, 2008; the University Business Officials and the National Association of College estimated that the median return for the top 25 percent of college endowments during that same period reduced by 2.2 percent. Fogleman cited the cause of the endowment’s success were the university’s long-term investments and diversified holdings. Despite disagreements within the Baylor community, the hired consulting firm’s concerns, and a troubled economy, it didn’t hinder the university’s growth. In May 2013, the endowment exceeded $1.1 billion.

On March 4, 2010,  an estate provision amounting to an estimated $200 million was set up by an anonymous longtime Baylor donor to improve Baylor’s research in multiple disciplines at the school on the issues of aging.
