History

In 1965, HPU was founded as Hawaiʻi Pacific College by Eureka Forbes, Paul C.T. Loo,  Elizabeth W. Kellerman, and Reverend Edmond Walker. The four famous and patriotic citizens wanted a private liberal arts college in Honolulu so they applied for a not-for-profit corporation charter of incorporation to be called Hawaiʻi Pacific College. On September 17, 1965, the state of Hawaiʻi granted Hawaiʻi Pacific a charter of incorporation.

In September 1966, Honolulu Christian College merged into Hawaiʻi Pacific College, and the state of Hawaiʻi granted a new charter. In 1967, James L. Meader was appointed Hawaiʻi Pacific College’s first President. President Meader consulted with community leaders to develop a comprehensive educational program.

On June 30, 1968, President Meader retired and the Board of Trustees elected the Reverend George A. Warmer as the second president of Hawaiʻi Pacific. Under his leadership, HPU implemented academic programs in cooperative education and the liberal arts.

In 1972,  in its first commencement class, Hawaiʻi Pacific College graduated seven students and established a School of Business Administration the same year. Chatt G. Wright was the first Dean of Hawaiʻi Pacific’s new School of Business Administration.

In 1973, the College was fully accreditated by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. In the following years, the English Foundations Program, for teaching non-native speakers of English, and the Division of Special Programs, for off-campus instruction at  Oʻahu military installations were created.

In 1976, President Warmer retired, and Chatt G. Wright was appointed Hawaiʻi Pacific’s third President. The college continued to develop through the 1980s. It also launched a Master of Science in Information Systems program, Master of Business Administration program, and a Master of Arts in Human Resource Management in addition to its undergraduate program of baccalaureate and associate degrees. In 1990, Hawaiʻi Pacific became Hawaiʻi Pacific University (HPU).

In 1992, Hawaiʻi Loa College merged into Hawaiʻi Pacific University. In 2004, the HPU International Vocal Ensemble performed O Magnum Mysterium and Morten Lauridsen’s Lux Aeterna at their Carnegie Hall debut.
