Apply for a study permit

If you can find a school that offers your desired co-op program, and you have been offered admission, the next thing is to start preparing to move to Canada. But to be allowed entry into the country, you need a study permit. Obtaining a permit to study in Canada is not difficult, but it is often recommended that you apply for a study permit as soon as you can. And to obtain a study permit, you have to meet up with the following requirements:

  • Must have been offered admission by a school in Canada;
  • Must be able to prove there’s enough money to sponsor your education in Canada;
  • Must present a police certificate saying you have no criminal record;
  • Must present a valid medical report saying you’re in good health condition;
  • Must be able to prove you would leave Canada once your study permit expires.

Apply for Co-Op work permit

Once you’ve gotten a study permit and you’ve gotten to Canada, the next thing expected of you, is to apply for a co-op work permit. To work at a company, when the time comes, you must have a co-op permit. Without a co-op work permit, you wouldn’t be allowed to work, even if your program is a co-op program. And it is always recommended that students apply for their co-op permits as soon as they can.

To apply for your co-op work permit, there are requirements. And these requirements are:

  • You must have a valid study permit;
  • Work must be required to complete your program [in other words, your program must be a co-op program];
  • The total amount of time you’d spend in your co-op placement, must not account for over 50 percent of your study program.

Once you meet up with these requirements, obtaining a co-op work permit should be no problem.

Start your program

At this stage, the next thing is just to wait till your co-op program starts at your school. The way schools go about their co-op programs are often different. But very often, students spend their first year in school developing their foundation.

And during the second term of their second year, they start to look for job opportunities. Your school would be responsible for posting these job opportunities. But at times, students would be allowed to look for job opportunities outside what the school is posting.

Once you’re able to find a job opportunity, you’d have to wait till the third term of your second year, before going ahead to gain some experience in the industry.

For many schools, the third term of their third year and fourth year would also be spent gaining real-life experience.

You should, however, note that for many schools offering co-op programs in Canada, they only allow their best students to take advantage of work opportunities. In other words, being offered admission to study a co-op program doesn’t guarantee you the chance to work, when the time comes. To be guaranteed the chance to work, when the time comes, you have to put in your best, especially during your first year.

And as regards what your CGPA has to be, to be considered worthwhile of co-op work opportunities, this would depend on your school. But most schools always demand at least 80 percent of the total CGPA, to be guaranteed co-op work opportunities.
