James Madison Fellowship Eligibility Requirements

For you to be qualified to apply for a fellowship:

  • You must be a U.S. citizen.
  • You must be a teacher or plan to become a teacher, of American history, American government, or civics classes.
  • You must have a bachelor’s

    degree or plan to bag a bachelor’s degree, no later than August 31st of the year you are applying.

James Madison Fellowship Program Award

The maximum amount that can be awarded to James Madison Fellowship recipient is $24,000, customized over the time of the study. For no situation will the award surpass $12,000 for one academic year of study. However, payments are made only for the actual costs of tuition, fees, and books, accommodation. They are made solely for the minimum number of credits required for the award of the degree for which a Fellow is enrolled.

The inability to complete the study for which the fellowship is granted, you must go to the Summer Institute that is on the constitution. Also, you can teach for the required amount of time involved by the award. This will result in forfeiture of the fellowship and request the return of all funds paid under the fellowship.

James Madison Fellowship Programs

The Foundation offers two types of fellowships:

  • Junior Fellowship

James Madison Fellowship Programs are granted to extraordinary college seniors and college graduates. But they must not have teaching experience who plan to become secondary school teachers of; American history, civic classes, government, or where you will teach topics on Constitution in grades 7–12. Junior Fellows are required to complete the graduate study within two academic years of full-time study.

  • Senior Fellowship

These Senior Fellowships are granted to extraordinary current teachers who are required to complete the study within five years of part-time study. 

Choice of Graduate School and Degree

James Madison Fellowships are majorly for graduate study leading to a master’s degree. James Madison Fellows may go to any accredited institution of higher education in the United States. All Fellows will be expected to pursue and finish a master’s degree in any of the following (in order of the Foundation’s preference):

  • Master of Arts (M.A.) in American history, political science, or government
  • Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) focusing on American Constitutional history or American government, political institutions, and political theory. Also, MAT degrees with no required constitutional coursework will not be accepted.
  • Master of Education (med)/ the Master of Arts or Master of Science in Education with a focus in American history or American government, political institutions, and political theory

1          Who is qualified to apply for a fellowship?

The fellowship is for U.S. citizens who demonstrate a commitment to civic responsibilities and professional development. Also, they must meet the graduate requirements admission in a certified U.S University and also provide a qualifying master’s degree program. Applicants must be willing to teach American history, American government, or civics classes on the Constitution full-time in grades 7–12.

#2       Can I apply for a James Madison Fellowship with a graduate degree?

You can, but the Foundation actively encourages the second master’s degree holder in Master’s of Arts (M.A.) in American history, political science, or government to apply.

#3       What are the selection criteria?

As an applicant, you will compete against other applicants from the states of their legal residence. Applicants are assessed based on their commitment to a career in teaching American history, government, or civics classes where you can teach topics on the Constitution at the secondary school level. Also, commitment to civic responsibility; commitment for study and performance as classroom teachers, and their proposed courses of graduate study.

All applicants will be assessed regardless of race, age, color, religion, disability, sex, national origin, sexual orientation, political affiliation, marital status, or other non-merit factors.

#4       Who selects the applicants?

Applicants are selected by the independent Fellowship Selection Committee organized by Scholarship America to evaluate all valid applications submitted by the annual deadline.

The Fellowship Selection Committee will critically review and rate each application on a merit basis. The Fellowship Selection Committee will further recommend to the Foundation the top applicants to be awarded a James Madison Fellowship.

#5       How many fellowships are awarded?

Well, the number of fellowships awarded is determined by the amount of funding available in any given year. Therefore, the goal of the Foundation is to select annually. A James Madison Fellow from all states, Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, District of Columbia, and a single territorial entity, from which a minimum of two fully qualified applications will be awarded.
