Lakehead University is a public research-oriented university. It has its campuses in Thunder Bay and Orillia areas, Ontario, Canada. It is is non-denominational and provincially supported university with undergraduate programs, as well as graduate programs.

akehead University was firstly Lakehead Technical Institute and later Lakehead College of Arts, Science, and Technology. With its inception on June 4, 1946, by the Province of Ontario, it commenced classes in January 1948. Classes took place in temporarily rented quarters downtown in Port Arthur. The institution, however, only became a university in 1965. This was when Lakehead College got permission to award degrees in arts and sciences. The academic staff at Lakehead University has continued to expand over time. Starting with only less than 50 workers, the LU now has over 300 full-time academic staff. Also, the University has well over 2,000 workers, all performing administrative duties. Such force drives the school to be an outstanding one. Scholarship and financial assistance.
Lakehead University provides over $11 million worth of scholarships for students yearly. This is used to assist students in need of financial assistance. This assistance comes in the form of bursaries, awards, and grants. The scholarships are available by the program. Some of the scholarships available are;

Entrance scholarships.

Lakehead University offers one of the top entrance scholarship programs to direct-from high school students. It is available for both local and international students. However, the value varies.

Value: For international students, the entrance scholarship is valued at $5,000. However, if academic excellence continues, a $20,000-$30,000 financial assistance can be awarded within 4 years.

Presidential Scholarship.

Lakehead University also offers Presidential scholarships to its applicants. The school offers the scholarship for 2 students annually.

Value: The value of the scholarship is about $30,000. This splits into $7,500/year for 4 years.
Eligibility: Two outstanding Canadian high school students who have demonstrated leadership qualities are deemed eligible. They must have shown great leadership skills both in high school and in their local community. A minimum of 90% average in Grade 12 U or M level courses are also important factors.
However, students must be citizens, permanent residents, or landed immigrants of Canada.

Alumni Association Entrance Scholarship.

Alumni association scholarship is available to students who have a parent as an alumnus.
The scholarship is valued at $2,500 and is also renewable.

Transfer Award.

You are eligible if you are a transfer student who will consequently register in a full-time undergraduate program at Lakehead University. The scholarship is worth between $500-$1,000. It is open to any student. However, the student must have shown a serious need for financial assistance before getting it.

There are other scholarship programs available at the institution. Some also, come from corporate donors and companies as well.

Cost of Living at Lakehead University

The University provides accommodation for its students across both campuses. Either at Orillia or Thunder Bay, you are bound to experience amazing residential services. From flexible room options to meal plans and services such as laundry, the campuses can be an amazing residence. For a full package, a student may pay as much as $12,000 yearly. However, this payment can be made in installments.

It is highly advisable to live on campus, however, living in a private residence too might be an option.

Housing in Ontario could go anywhere between $800-1000. The prices rise or drop with the type of area. Highbrow areas are expected to be more expensive.
Feeding would certainly be cheaper if one eats home. However, the cost of a meal at restaurants is usually between $10-15. Whereas, an average expense on foodstuffs for a month is about $250-350. This depends heavily on the meal plan and diet structure.

Using the bus would cost another $100-120. This, however, still depends on how much you travel within the city. Out of state movement would certainly cost extra charges.
Other expenses such as the internet, clothing, and the likes would be solely reliant on the student’s lifestyle.

This would round up to about $1,500-2,000 monthly.

Most students who stay in private apartments most times get jobs to fund their bills. However, getting a roommate shares the total expenses.
