The  Mastercard Scholarships for International students at the University of British Columbia (UBC) Canada is an undergraduate and Master’s scholarship program scholarship meant for African applicants who are deemed eligible for undergraduate programs in development-related fields.

MasterCard Scholarship Program for African Students in Canada 2021

The University of British Columbia, Canada has partnered with the MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program to provide comprehensive scholarships to students from Sub-Saharan Africa. UBC is among the first Canadian universities to join The MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program and one of 15 institutions in the world participating in the $500 million global education initiative.

The Program’s aim is to provide access to education for academically talented, yet economically marginalized young people and 

The $25 million grant from The MasterCard Foundation will allow more than 110 students from Africa to receive comprehensive scholarships to live and learn at the University of British Columbia.

Level/Field of Study

The MasterCard scholarships are available for pursuing undergraduate programs in development-related fields.

Yet, candidates under the Master’s scholarship can still pursue their program at UBC’s Vancouver campus in any of the specific courses below;

The Mastercard scholarship for African students is hosted by the University of British Columbia, Canada.

This scholarship is open to international students from African countries.

Scholarship Benefits

Successful applicants for the Mastercard foundation scholarship will receive a scholarship equivalent to the costs related to attaining a degree including travel, tuition, textbooks, housing, food, and living expenses.

Beneficiaries will also receive financial, academic, social, and post-graduation support which will enable them to build experiences and competencies critical for academic success.

Eligibility Requirements

Interested students must be nominated for the Undergraduate MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program at the University of British Columbia.

Nominations will be accepted from secondary schools and recognized international development agencies and their affiliates and registered local or international charitable and not-for-profit organizations.

Each school or organization may nominate a maximum of three students.

To be eligible for consideration as an undergraduate for The MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program at UBC, you must:

  • be a citizen of and be currently residing in a Sub-Saharan African country;
  • present economically disadvantaged financial circumstances, and be able to show your lack of financial means from family or other sources to pursue post-secondary (university) education in their home country or elsewhere;
  • have achieved academic excellence under difficult circumstances, and mirrored leadership qualities or potential;
  • demonstrate an interest and commitment to giving back to his/her home community in ways that enhance the economic growth and social development of Africa, through engagement in activities outside the classroom, in the school, and/or community;
  • be graduating/recently graduated from a recognized senior secondary school;
  • be an international student who will be studying at UBC on a Canadian Study Permit;
  • commit to returning to Africa immediately after graduation from UBC to apply their training and skills to the betterment of their country and individuals.
  • be applying for their first undergraduate degree in one of the following Faculties at UBC’s Vancouver campus:
  • Faculty of Applied Science (Engineering)
  • Faculty of Forestry (Bachelor of Science in Forestry)
  • Faculty of Land & Food Systems (including Global Resource Systems; Food, Nutrition & Health; Applied Biology [Applied Animal Biology, Applied Plant & Soil Sciences or Food & the Environment])
  • Sauder School of Business (Bachelor of Commerce)

However, students intending to study a Master’s program under the MasterCard Scholarship for Africans need to;

  • have completed a Bachelor’s degree;
  • not have a Graduate degree already;
  • be a citizen of and have lived a significant part of their life in a Sub-Saharan African country;
  • present economically disadvantaged financial circumstances, and be able to show a lack of financial means from family or other sources to pursue graduate education in their home country or elsewhere;
  • have achieved academic excellence under difficult circumstances, and shown leadership qualities or potential;
  • demonstrate an interest in and commitment to giving back to his/her home community in ways that enhance the economic growth and social development of Africa, through engagement in activities in their current profession, university, or community;
  • be willing to run after this program in one of the eligible courses given above;
  • be a person who requires a Canadian study permit to study in Canada;
  • commit to returning to Africa immediately after graduation from UBC to apply their training and skills to the betterment of others.
