About the University of Waterloo

The University of Waterloo commonly known as Waterloo, UW, or UWaterloo) is a public research university with the main campus in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. The institution originated from the Waterloo College Associate Faculties, established on 4 April 1956; a semi-autonomous entity of Waterloo College, which was an affiliate of the University of Western Ontario. Waterloo is also a member of the U15, a group of research-intensive universities in Canada.

In 1959, this entity formally separated from Waterloo College and was incorporated as a university with the passage of the University of Waterloo Act by the Legislative Assembly of Ontario. The purpose of its establishment was to fill the need to train engineers and technicians for Canada’s growing postwar economy. It grew substantially over the next decade, adding a faculty of arts in 1960, and the College of Optometry of Ontario (now the School of Optometry and Vision Science), which moved from Toronto in 1967.

The University of Waterloo is a co-educational institution, with approximately 30,600 undergraduate and 5,300 postgraduate students enrolled there in 2016. Alumni and former students of the university can be found across Canada and in over 150 countries; with several award winners, government officials, and business leaders having been associated with Waterloo. Waterloo’s varsity teams are known as the Waterloo Warriors and they compete in the Ontario University Athletics conference of the U Sports.

There are three satellite campuses and four affiliated university colleges at the university of waterloo. The main campus is on 404 hectares (998 acres) of land adjacent to “Uptown” Waterloo and Waterloo Park. The university offers academic programs administered by six faculties and thirteen faculty-based schools. Waterloo administers the largest post-secondary co-operative education program in the world, with over 20,000 undergraduate students enrolled in the university’s co-op program.


Waterloo functions on a term-based system, with fall, winter, and spring terms.  There are 6 faculties, which operate a combined total of thirteen schools and over fifty academic departments. Undergraduate programs consist the majority of the school’s enrollment, made up of 24,377 full-time and part-time undergraduate students. The university conferred 5,741 bachelor’s degrees and first professional degrees, 1,605 master’s degrees, and 332 doctoral degrees, during the 2016–2017 academic school year.


In Waterloo, financial aid available to students includes the Ontario Student Assistance Program and Canada Student Loans and Grants through the federal and provincial governments. Mathematics National Scholarships 2023

The Mathematics National Scholarships consist of approximately 10 scholarships valued at between $12,000 and $25,000. Each is for eight academic terms which are awarded to students participating in one of the faculty’s academic plans (excluding software engineering, and computer science). computer and financial management).

Payments beyond Year One are dependent on the student maintaining an overall academic average of 80% or greater and continued enrolment in an approved program.

The typical candidate will have a distinguished academic standing, especially in mathematics, as well as a record of accomplishments in mathematics and/or computer science contests throughout high school.

Candidates will also be expected to demonstrate an interest in mathematics or computer science beyond standard course requirements, including activities such as active membership in math or computer science clubs, enriched mathematics studies, employment/voluntary experiences, or hobbies.

The scholarship is awarded to students pursuing an Undergraduate Program in any of the following fields of study: Mathematics – Business Administration (Laurier) and Computer Science (Waterloo) – Double Diploma, Business Administration (Laurier) and Mathematics (Waterloo) – Double Degree, Honors in Mathematics, Mathematics / Financial Analysis and Risk Management, Computer Science, Mathematics / Business Administration, Mathematics / Auditing.
