Netflix Careers: How to Get a Netflix Job in 2022

A Brief History of Netflix.

Knowing as much about Netflix Careers and Netflix’s history will give you an advantage if you are interested in getting a job with Netflix.

Reed Hastings and Marc Randolph, serial entrepreneurs, founded Netflix in 1997 as a subscription DVD service (remember those?). Customers would place their orders on Netflix’s website and receive DVDs in the mail. When they were finished, they simply returned them in the envelopes provided by Netflix. The idea was to reach customers who didn’t have easy access to a video rental store, but it quickly grew into a much larger convenience phenomenon.

On May 23, 2002, the company went public on the NASDAQ. It had a market capitalization of $300 million at the time and had grown to more than 600,000 subscribers. Randolph, the company’s founding CEO, stepped down from the board of directors a year later.

With the release of “House of Cards” in 2013, the streaming giant began to produce its own content in-house. Its content studio has grown dramatically in the years since, increasing its presence in international markets and increasing original programming to more than 40% of its available streaming content. As of 2021, the streamer had been nominated for 741 Emmy awards and had won 156 of them. Its studio has become so important to the company’s success that, in July 2020, Netflix announced that Ted Sarandos, the studio’s head, and Chief Content Officer, would join Hastings as co-CEO.

Today, its streaming service has more than 209 million subscribers, the most in the industry, and its market capitalization has risen to more than $300 billion. Disney, on the other hand, has 107 million subscribers across three platforms (Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+).

Netflix Recruitment Process.

Online Application:

This is obviously the first step. The application will happen on their dedicated recruitment website –https://jobs.netflix.com/. Here you will find out the JD of the role and also a description of their ideal candidate.

Phone call from a recruiter

Netflix’s hiring process will always begin with a 30- to a 45-minute phone call from a recruiter. You will be sent a copy of Netflix’s core values and company culture prior to the call. Before your interview, read this thoroughly and become acquainted with the language and culture.

During this call, you will be asked why you want to work for Netflix and will be asked where you are in your career. They’ll inquire about your experience and ask you a few questions about your skillset. According to one Glassdoor employee review from November 2021, a recruiter may ask questions about Netflix’s culture as well as other technical questions such as:

“How do you feel about Netflix’s culture memo?”

“How would you describe your own management style?”

“Does Netflix have any vulnerabilities?”

Many previous interviewees also stated that you may be asked how to solve a hypothetical situation in this first interview.

Phone interview with hiring manager

This second phone call will happen a few days or a week after your first call. You will be interviewed by a hiring or engineering manager, who will ask you technical questions about your background and experience. You may also be asked about your resume and other behavioral questions about the Netflix culture.

A take-home project is an alternative to this phone call. You have six to eight hours to complete this project. A sample project would be to create a microservice that calculates and edits subscription pricing based on the rules that you provide.

Panel of on-site interviewers

The on-site interview with Netflix is divided into two parts. The first round will consist of four technical interviews with members of the team. The second half of the game is less technical. You will meet with human resources personnel as well as other directors.

The first half

Applicants are interviewed four times for a total of 45 minutes. These interviews will differ in format; some will be one-on-one, while others will involve two interviewers.

Prepare to take on whiteboard challenges and questions that will help you hone your skills and technologies. Expect to be quizzed on algorithms, cultural fit, and data structures.

Even if the position you’re interviewing for isn’t technically oriented, don’t be surprised if you’re asked to provide brain teasers. While there is no right or wrong answer to these questions, hiring managers are interested in how you think and solve problems.

It’s important to remember that if you don’t perform well in the first half, you won’t be able to advance to the second half.

The second half

The second half of the interview is divided into three 45-minute sessions. Human resources, the hiring manager, and the engineering manager will all be contacted. HR and the hiring manager will ask more questions about behavior and culture, while the engineering manager will ask more technical questions.

Expect to hear questions about culture such as:

“You have a product improvement idea, but you’re afraid of stepping on a coworker’s toes.” “How do you spend your time?”

“How would you collaborate with a team on a fictitious project?”

“Can you tell us about a time when you were able to provide feedback to your superiors?”

“Tell us about a time when you had to deal with negative feedback and how you handled it.”

Expect to be asked technical questions such as the following:

“If Netflix wants to expand its presence in Europe, what steps should be taken to assess the size of the European market, and what should Netflix do to capture this market?”

“Who do you believe Netflix’s main competitor is?” Why?”

“How would you obtain metrics to assess the overall performance of the team?”

Netflix Careers- Becoming a team member

If Netflix decides to move forward after your on-site interview, you should receive an offer from Netflix within 1 to 2 weeks. This gives them enough time to conduct additional interviews and draft an offer letter. When this offer is sent, the hiring manager will contact you to discuss your compensation package (salary and stock options), as well as your start date. You can look at Netflix’s org chart before your start date to see who your team members will be and how you’ll fit into the company. If you don’t get a job with Netflix, you should hear back within six to twelve months.

If you don’t get a job with Netflix, don’t give up on finding a suitable position for yourself. Interviewees are encouraged to reapply once their experience and skills have grown.

If you want to take a different path, there are hundreds of Netflix Careers listings to choose from. With a little effort and perseverance on your part, you’ll be able to find work sooner than you think.

Netflix Summer Internship

Interns, recent college graduates, and junior-level developers are typically not hired by Netflix. There are some exceptions for exceptional candidates or those with very rare skills.

At Netflix, there is also no formal career development or structured ladder. Employees do not start at the “bottom” and are guided down specific paths. Employees are expected to chart their own course and take charge of their own professional development; the company will not do it for them. Internships, whether formal or informal, are typically part of a company’s career development strategy.

Internships can also be used as a recruiting strategy to expand the pool of qualified college graduates or gain access to university researchers. Those interns can be viewed as the start of a “pipeline” that will eventually produce senior engineers and managers.

However, two years Netflix introduced a summer Internship program which they called ML Research Internships at Netflix.

Netflix Machine Learning Internship

Every year since 2020, Netflix Research hosts summer interns, building on previous summers’ positive experiences. They are looking for talented people who possess subsets of the following qualifications:

  • Enrolled graduate student (PhD candidates preferred) pursuing a graduate degree in a STEM field, engaged in ongoing research at an accredited university, and authorized to work in the United States
  • Prior experience with statistics or machine learning is required.
  • Programming experience in at least one language
  • Curious, self-motivated, and eager to solve open-ended challenges.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Knowledge of distributed computing
  • familiar with best practices in software engineering (e.g. code review, version control, testing, etc.)
  • Capable of writing SQL queries or Spark

Netflix provides a personalized experience for interns and their goal is to provide an experience that is similar to what it is like to work at Netflix. They place qualified interns in projects and groups based on their interests and skillsets, and they fully integrate interns into those teams. Past ML research interns, for example, have worked in areas as diverse as personalization, reinforcement learning, natural language understanding, computer vision, causal inference, fairness, and systems.

Netflix’s Emerging Talent team has also developed a centralized program to bring their entire intern class together for various social and learning events throughout the summer. Netflix is a one-of-a-kind place to work, and they live by their values, so we encourage you to learn more about their culture.

Duration of the Internship.

Internships are paid and last at least 12 weeks, with a few set start dates in May or June to accommodate varying school calendars. Depending on the team, their summer internships in 2022 will be located remotely, in their Los Gatos, CA, or in our Los Angeles, CA, office. The offer package will include travel and housing assistance.

How to Apply for the Netflix Summer Internship?

Applications for Summer 2022 ML Research Internships at Netflix will be open on their careers site at the end of August, and interviews will begin in September. To sign up to be notified once they start accepting applications please fill out this form.
