History of NYIT

In 1955, the New York Institute of Technology was founded under a temporary charter granted to the New York State Board of Regents to NYIT. Its first campus opened at 500 Pacific Street in the Borough of Brooklyn, New York.

The founder of NYIT, Alexander Schure, started NYIT to offer career-oriented professional education, provide all qualified students access to opportunities, and support application-oriented research. Schure later became the first NYIT president. In the higher education sector in the early days, there was a heated debate over the idea that humanities research would be dragged under excessive emphasis on engineering and science. NYIT aimed to find an equilibrium between engineering and science as well as the liberal arts curriculum in the years since its founding, and since then, it has focused on this model to prepare students for future professions.

In the academic year 1958-1959, the College had 300 students, and it was now time to increase its physical facilities. In April of 1958, the College acquired its Pythian Temple located at 135-145 W. 70th St. in Manhattan for its main building. The structure was located next to the planned Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts and was an elaborate 12-story structure with an entrance that was columned. Built in 1929 at the price of $2.5 million, it had an auditorium that could seat 1,200 people among its amenities.

In 1958, NYIT was the sponsor of the inaugural National Technology Awards, created by Frederick Pittera, an organizer of international fairs and participant on the NYIT Board of Trustees, to raise funds for the NYIT labs in science and technology. The awards ceremony, which took place in the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, was attended by more than hundreds of guests. Entertainment was from the U.S. Air Force Band. 36th President of the United States Lyndon Johnson was the main speech speaker. The speech was broadcast nationwide through ABC Radio Network. ABC Radio Network.

The honorees included Dr. Wernher von Braun and Major General Bernard Schriever, the Commander General for the Ballistic Air Command. Photographs, press clips, and audio recordings of the event are available in the Lyndon Johnson Library in Austin, Texas.
