Obtaining a Ph.D. degree from a school in Canada is broken down into three phases. And these phases involved are things we’d be discussing in this content. Phase 1: Find and apply for a desired Canadian Ph.D. program

For anyone to obtain their Ph.D. degree from a Canadian institution, the first thing expected of you is to find a Ph.D. program you find desirable. There are many schools offering Ph.D. programs in the country, so you just have to pick one of them. And as for those who have no idea of what schools offer Ph.D. programs, here are some of them:

However, not just anyone would be allowed into a Ph.D. program in Canada. To get into any of the Ph.D. programs in the country, you’d need a Bachelor’s degree in a related course. And not just any Bachelor’s degree, you must have graduated with a first-class or second-class upper. It is, however, important to state that there are some schools that wouldn’t even allow Bachelor’s degree holders to get into their Ph.D. programs. Rather than allowing BSc degree holders, they’d demand that you have a Master’s degree. In other words, Master’s students have higher chances of getting into Ph.D. programs in the country.

Another important requirement is the ability to communicate excellently in English or French. These languages are what you’d use during your Ph.D. program, so it’s very important you understand them. And to prove you’re good at any of these two languages, you’d have to provide some valid certification showing you can really communicate in them. However, as for students who are not ordinarily English or French speakers, you’d have to learn one of these languages and take a test in it.

The third requirement for people who’d like to obtain their PhD in Canada, is a high score in one of the recognized graduate admission tests. Graduate admission tests, are ways of helping universities know if applicants have what it takes to come out successfully as a PhD holder. And the graduate admission tests recognized in Canada, are:

  • Graduate Management Admissions Test [GMAT]: For business school applicants.
  • Graduate Record Examination [GRE]: For applicants across all disciplines.
  • Test of English as a Foreign Language [TOEFL]: For applicants who aren’t normally English Language speakers.
  • International English Languages Testing System [IELTS]: A TOEFL alternative.
  • Law School Admission Test [LSAT]: For law-related applicants.

Phase 2: Submit all necessary documents

After successfully finding and applying for a PhD program in Canada, you’d get a response from the school, telling you if your request would be considered or not. If you receive a positive response, then the next thing expected of you, is to submit all important documents. The way you’re going to submit these documents, would depend on each school. In other words, the school would provide a way in which you can submit your documents. And as regards documents you’d be required to submit, the generally the following:

  • Statement of Purpose: This is a document containing information about your background, academic or practical experience, awards, publication, etc.
  • Letter of Reference: Some schools always demand two letters of reference, while we also have some which demand three.
  • Academic Transcript and Degree Certificates
  • Curriculum Vitae [CV]
  • Languages Test Result [if required]

If you provide valid documents, you should get accepted into the PhD program you applied for. And you then can move on to the next phase.

Phase 3: Obtain a study permit and move to Canada

At this point, you have been offered the opportunity to obtain your PhD in Canada. But to be allowed into Canada, you’d need a study permit. For those who don’t understand what is meant by study permit. This is a document which gives you permission to enter Canada, so that you can study at the school where you were offered admission. And getting a study permit isn’t a difficult thing. It is, however, important to note that there are requirements needed, to be given a study permit. And these requirements are:

  • Proof of admission into a Ph.D. program
  • Proof of the ability to sponsor your stay in Canada
  • Proof of no criminal record [Police certificates are often requested]
  • Proof of being in a good health condition

If you meet up with all these requirements, then you should be given a study permit. And at this point, what’s left for you, is to travel down to Canada and start your Ph.D. program.

1. Canadian Ph.D. opens way to permanent residency

The Canadian government has been really nice towards international students who they perceive can be of great asset to their country. And if you can complete a Ph.D. program in the country, you get the chance to get permanent residency. And if you’d like to take it a step further, you can apply to become a Canadian citizen, after staying in the country for over three years.

2. You can work during your PhD program

In many other countries offering good PhD programs, a study permit doesn’t give permission to work in the country. But for international students who are in PhD programs offered in Canada, you are allowed to work in the country. In other words, this gives you the opportunity to support yourself financially, while also studying.

However, there’s a limit to how many hours you can work, per week.
