Canada’s education system is universally reputable. The country is home to many continental high-ranked universities.

The educational system in Canada is top-notch. Many international students across the world desire to study in the country.

Postgraduate Diploma and Master’s Degree in Canada 2022

Postgraduate Diploma

A Postgraduate Diploma is also known as a “Graduate Diploma.” The program is a qualification that is obtainable after the completion of an undergraduate degree program.

The Postgraduate Diploma covers a period of two to three semesters in a year. This program tends to focus on the acquisition of practical skills with studies in science, technology, business, and healthcare. In Canada, the Postgraduate Diploma program is vocational.

Master’s Degree

A Master’s Degree is a postgraduate academic degree awarded by universities upon completion of a chosen course of study. These programs may be thesis-based or course-based.

Examples of programs offered include Master of Arts, Master of Science, Master of Research, and Master of Business,.

The Differences

Admission Requirements

A primary requirement for admission into a Postgraduate Diploma program is an undergraduate degree with a cumulative score of at least 60 percent.
Applicants may also need a minimum of one to two years of work experience.

For admission into a Master’s Degree program, an undergraduate certificate is a requirement. Some universities may also include professional experiences in their requirements.

Area Of Study

The Postgraduate Diploma centers on the acquisition of professional and vocational skills. It involves the practical study of a chosen field of interest.

Examples of areas to choose from include arts, science, technology, and business.

The focus of the Master’s Program involves theoretical and applied topics. It also centers on high-order skills in analysis and critical evaluation.

The Master’s program covers the following scopes:

  • Applicative teachings
  • The ability to solve complex problems
  • The ability to think rigorously and independently in whatever field you choose.

Academic Duration

The academic timeframe of the Postgraduate Diploma is nine months to one year. This duration, however, depends on the course of study and the university’s calendar.

The duration of Postgraduate Diploma programs may take longer. This exception is in the case of students on part-time enrollment.

The academic period of the Postgraduate Diploma is relatively shorter than for Master’s Programs.
A Master’s Program usually spans a period of one to two years. Completing a course-based Master’s Program can take up to one and a half to two years.

Thesis-based programs take two to three years to complete. The extended period is due to intensive academic research and projects.

Some students may take more extended periods to complete a course. The reason is because of scheduled restrictions.

Tuition Fee

The general belief is that Master’s Programs are more expensive due to the more extended timeframe. This conception is, however, not the case in all circumstances.

Though the tuition fees for the Master’s Program are relatively higher, the university system and the field of study are significant determinants.

For example, enrolling for a Master of Arts Degree will usually cost more than for a Master of Architecture.

University Funding

Most universities in Canada are public universities, and they receive funds from the government. The availability of funding, however, depends on the type of programs offered.

For course-based Master’s and Postgraduate Diplomas, getting funding from the university can be difficult. One reason is that they are associated with lower levels of research and professionalism than the thesis-based Master’s Program.

For a thesis-based Master’s Program, funding from professors or supervisors is readily available. Thesis-based programs require intensive research and analysis.

Pre-admission Supervisor’s Approval

Those who wish to apply for a Postgraduate Diploma or a course-based Master’s Program do not require a supervisor’s acceptance. All they need is an application letter and a certificate of at least third-class honors in relevant discipline from any university.

Thesis-based Master’s applicants must write to professors in their chosen university with their curriculum vitae (CV) and research interests. They must get a professor’s approval before they can obtain admission into their desired university.

Failure to do this will render the application void.

Postgraduate Work Permit

A Postgraduate work permit allows foreigners to remain in Canada. This document also permits them to work full-time for up to three years after completion of studies.

The maximum length of the Postgraduate work permit is three years. It cannot be valid longer than a student’s study duration.

Individuals will need a Postgraduate work permit for employment in Canada.

Prospects

Students who enroll for a Postgraduate Diploma are eligible to apply for a job after their studies. They can also choose to pursue a Master’s Program in their course of study.

Course-based Master’s students can also apply for jobs, but they are not eligible to pursue a doctorate (Ph.D.)
Only scholars who complete a thesis-based Master’s Program are eligible to apply for a doctorate.

The job chances for all students are equal (mostly in the technical and professional fields).

Both the Postgraduate Diploma and the Master’s Degree program seek the acquisition of more knowledge, skills, and expertise. All these will enable students to become more efficient in whatever field of study.
