There are eleven residential colleges and eight schools of academic study at Rice University, including the Wiess School of Natural Sciences, the School of Social Sciences, the School of Architecture, the George R. Brown School of Engineering, and the Shepherd School of Music, and the School of Humanities. There are more than fifty majors and two dozen minors in Rice’s undergraduate program which allows a high level of flexibility in pursuing multiple degree programs. Undergraduate 

Rice University requires all applicants to submit either the ACT or SAT (corresponding writing tests are optional). Freshman or International applicants who will graduate from high schools outside the U.S and all transfer applicants will be required to submit an official score report at the time of application. Admitted students who choose to enroll at Rice will be required to submit official test scores before matriculation.

In a situation whereby an applicant submits both an SAT and an ACT score, the Rice University committee considers the test that best enhances the application. A minimum score on these tests is not required. 

English Proficiency Requirement for International Citizens

Applicants whose first language is not English are required to demonstrate English proficiency, which can be achieved in one of two ways, either the applicants have received two years of full-time instruction in English at a high school or college or the. Applicants have not received two years of full-time instruction in English. The latter must submit official test scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). The minimum acceptable score on the TOEFL Internet-based test is 100 or a 75 on the paper-delivered test. The minimum acceptable score on the IELTS is 7.

High School Transcripts

A high school transcript is crucial to the Rice University admission process. Official high school/secondary school transcripts must include grades from ninth through eleventh grade as well as courses being taken in the senior year. Also, transcripts must be submitted by the applicant’s high school, preferably online via the Coalition Application or the Common Application. Transcripts will not be accepted by fax or email.

Applicants can take at least 20 college preparatory courses in high school, but minimally will be expected to have taken at least 16 years of a unit of college preparatory subjects, including:

  • four years of English
  • two years of one foreign language
  • three years of college preparatory math
  • two years of laboratory science
  • two years of social science
  • three courses in any of the above subjects 

Applicants to the natural sciences and engineering divisions are required to take trigonometry or precalculus, chemistry, and physics. 

Postgraduate

International graduate applicants will need to consult with their program of interest on exact requirements. Among the requirements to submit are:

  • Official transcript from the previous institution
  • $85 application fee
  • GRE or other applicable test scores
  • TOEFL or IELTS if international applicant
  • Letters of recommendation
  • Writing samples
  • Portfolio
  • Statement of purpose
