History

Sacred Heart University was founded in 1963 by the Most Reverend Walter W. Curtis, Bishop of the Diocese of Bridgeport, on the grounds that were once Notre Dame Catholic High School. The university is governed and managed by the laity, independent and local-oriented. The first university president is William H. Conley (1907-1974). The former American diplomat in the United States and Diplomat Thomas Patrick Melady served as the university’s president from 1976 until 1986.

The enrollment has increased from 173 to more than 8,500 full-time and part-time undergraduate and graduate students and faculty have grown between 9 and 281 full-time faculty and more than 520 adjunct professors since 1963.

In 1990, Sacred Heart built the first dorms and then started accepting residential. It currently has ten residential buildings, with fifty percent of the full-time undergraduates living in university housing.

It has 32 teams that compete within Division I. The year 1997 saw the opening of the William H. Pitt Health and Recreation Center. 

In 1981, the then-United States vice-president George H.W. Bush was awarded an honorary degree from the Sacred Heart.

In 2006 Jack Welch, the Chief Executive Officer at General Electric made a financial donation to the university, and the College of Business was named in his honor.

The university is comprised of 5 colleges. College of Arts & Sciences comprising the School of Communication & Media and the School of Computing. Jack Welch College of Business and Technology; College of Health Professions; College of Nursing, and the Isabelle Farrington College of Education. The New England Commission accredits sacred Heart University for Higher Education.

Sacred Heart University offers more than 80 master’s, bachelor’s, and doctoral degrees. Based on the degree program, sacred Heart also provides students who are eligible to earn an undergraduate degree and a master’s degree in five to six years of study.

Student life

Theatre Arts Program

The Theatre Arts Program began in 2009 with the premiere of the first Sacred Heart University musical production, Rent. Other productions include Little Shop of Horrors in 2011 and Little Shop of Horrors in 2012. The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee in 2013, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street in 2015, in addition to Jesus Christ Superstar in 2017. The Superstar of Jesus Christ in 2017.

Its Theatre Arts Program has a student-produced and a student-written and performed festival known as “Theatrefest”. The program also includes an improv troupe named The Pioneer Players. In the year 2016, The program launched its repertory theatre program. In 2017, Sacred Heart expanded its Theatre Arts Program at the beginning of the National Playwriting Competition & Intern Program.
