About Skidmore College

Skidmore College is known as a private liberal arts college in Saratoga Springs, New York. There are approximately 2,650 students registered in the college pursuing a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree in one of more than 60 areas of study.

History of Skidmore College

Skidmore College has gone through many transformations since its creation earlier in the 20th century as a women’s college.

The first president of the college was Charles Henry Keyes in 1912, and in 1919 Skidmore granted its first baccalaureate degrees through the authority of the University of the State of New York. In 1922 the college had been chartered independently as a four-year, degree-granting college.

Skidmore College was created in downtown Saratoga Springs, but on October 28, 1961, the college purchased the Jonsson Campus, 850 acres (3.4 km2) of land on the external borders of Saratoga Springs.

The first new buildings on the campus were launched in 1966, and by 1973 the relocation was mostly complete. The former campus was sold to Verrazzano College, a new institution that could not continue, and its buildings have been put to other uses.

The college embarked on admitting men to its regular undergraduate program in 1971. Skidmore in addition launched the “University Without Walls” (UWW) program, and this program allows nonresident students above the age of 25 to earn bachelor’s degrees. In May 2011, the program ended, and also in 1971, Skidmore formed a Phi Beta Kappa chapter.

In 1988, Skidmore faculty established the Collaborative Research Program, which allows students with access to co-author papers and studies with professors. Skidmore commenced issuing master’s degrees in 1991 through its Master of Arts in Liberal Studies (MALS) program.

The Skidmore Honors Forum was established in 1998. Marc C. Conner, Ph.D., became the college’s eighth president in 2020, he replaced Philip A. Glotzbach, who served as president since 2003.

2006 marked the launch of the largest campaign in Skidmore’s history, Creative Thought. Bold Promise. The target was to raise $200 million. Virtually popular courses include English, business, psychology, political science, economics, studio art, theater, biology, and environmental studies

The World Languages and Literatures Department offers classes in six languages and self-instructional schoolwork in additional five languages.

The student body is also encouraged to take their schooling outside of the classroom with internships

These can be taken for credit and can be accomplished across the academic year; approximately 85% of students partake in an internship in the course of their Skidmore career.

Opportunities for these internships are extremely advertised both by the departments themselves and by the career center.

Owing to the definition of degrees by New York State, Skidmore couldn’t accredit all departments with a Bachelor of Science. A B.S. is awarded to those students studying art (studio), dance, dance-theater, education, exercise science, business, social work, and theater.

The distinction depends on the number of hours of “non-liberal arts” courses permitted toward the 120 credit hours required for graduation, 60 for a B.S. and 30 for a B.A. These “non-liberal arts” assigned courses are regarded by the college to be professional.
