About the Sponsor: Stephen Phillips
Stephen Phillips was a member of a prominent Salem, Massachusetts family in England. For many years, the Massachusetts family had been actively involved in the merchant sailing era of Salem that followed the American Revolution.
After graduating from Harvard in 1929, Stephen went to work in the family office. During those years, he suffered from tuberculosis and often sought treatment for his ailment. It was during a stay at Saranac Lake in New York that he met his future bride, Betty Wright, who was also suffering from brucellosis and seeking a cure
Phillip and Betty Wright were brought together by a mutual interest in ham radio. Within a few months, they were married and set up a house next door to Stephen’s childhood home at 34 Chestnut Street in Salem.
After their marriage, the two discovered that many in Salem couldn’t afford a college education so they took a great interest in helping students obtain a college education which for many in Salem was not within reach.
One reason why Mrs. Phillips was particularly interested in assisting students to achieve a college education because she personally struggled for years to complete her undergraduate and graduate degrees due to a lack of finances and health issues.
After Stephen Phillips’s death in 1971, Betty Phillips thought about establishing a substantial scholarship fund to help college students with limited financial resources achieve high academic goals.
Twenty years after her husband’s death, Mrs. Phillips launched what is today known as the Stephen Phillips Memorial Scholarship Fund. From 1991 until her death in 1996, Mrs. Phillips was personally involved in selecting the scholarship recipients.
Since the fund began giving scholarships, over $58,000,000 in scholarship grants have been given to more than 3,800 students.

Usual deadline – 12:00 pm, May 1st, 2023. Decisions will be communicated to candidates at the end of June.
* Early Warning Deadline – April 15th, April 3rd, 3:00 pm. This date is reserved for secondary school students who have information on the financial assistance of the college they wish to attend.
