Founded in 1872, Virginia Tech is a public institution with a total undergraduate enrollment of 25,791. The campus size is 2,600 acres, and its setting is rural.

Virginia Tech’s ranked 69 in the 2018 edition of Best Colleges in National Universities. Its out-of-state tuition and fees are $29,371, while the in-state tuition and fees are $12,852.

The university, a former military technical institute in Blacksburg, encourages students to “invent the future.” It is a research powerhouse with two university research centers and seven research institutes that offer undergraduate and graduate students research opportunities.

This year, all degree-seeking undergraduate applicants: international, domestic, and transfer will now use the new application platform: The Coalition for Access, Affordability, and Success. 

The Coalition is a third-party application accepted by hundreds of colleges around the country. Students can start building their profile anytime, which will help them streamline their application process later.

If you’re applying to a school that accepts the Coalition application, use the Coalition profile information to submit much of your information without having to enter it twice or more.

While application season doesn’t start until Fall 2023, your profile is open year-round and allows you to update your information as needed and add new achievements.

Self-reported Academic Record

If Virginia Tech is the only school you’re applying to, you can skip several parts of the Coalition application listed below:

Virginia Tech will accept a self-reported academic record, Instead of the Coalition coursework. The reporting system is usually available when the application opens. Still, if Virginia Tech is the only school you’re considering, you do not need to worry about filling in the coursework in the Coalition profile.

Virginia Tech also requires short-answer essay responses on the 2023-2024 application. These will help students narrate their unique stories and allow their life experiences to enrich their application.

The acceptance rate at Virginia Tech is 64.8%, which is relatively high. In other words, out of 100 applications for admission, 65 will be approved since they match the criteria.

What are the SAT requirements for students to be admitted to Virginia Tech?

Basically, Virginia Tech requires applicants to be in the top 29 percent of SAT test-takers. SAT composite scores are consistently taken down to 1170 on a 1600 scale, which makes admission possible.

Students with SATs as low as 1065 could be accepted. The estimated average SAT composite for admitted freshmen is 1275 out of 1600, and 87 percent of applicants submit SAT scores to the school.

Prior to being taken into consideration for freshmen entrance, you must finish:

  • 3 math classes (includes algebra I, geometry, and algebra II)
  • 2 laboratory science units (chosen from biology, chemistry, or physics)
  • Extra curricular units (foreign language is highly recommended)

Additional prerequisites for certain programs include a year of laboratory science or advanced math. The majority of applicants have at least a B+ grade point average and have completed more than the bare minimum.

For 2023-24, the university will implement new fees for incoming students in engineering ($2,000 per year), building construction ($1,500 per year), architecture and design ($1,500 per year), business ($75 per credit hour), and agriculture ($750 per year).

These fees will apply only to incoming students in the aforementioned disciplines. Existing program-specific fees for returning students will be increased.

International Students

If you’re an international student, the following is a list of estimated expenses you can expect as an undergraduate at Virginia Tech during the 2023-2024 school year (nine months or two semesters in length).

These expenses are for single students (if you have a spouse, you should add $5,750 and $2,750 for each dependent child). These estimates are subject to change.
