About DAAD

DAAD stands for “German Academic Exchange Service“, a private, federally funded and state-funded, self-governing national agency of the institutions of higher education in Germany. It was founded in 1925 and representing 365 German higher education institutions (100 universities and technical universities, 162 general universities of applied sciences, and 52 colleges of music and art).

The German Academic Exchange Service, or DAAD is the largest German support organisation in the field of international academic co-operation. It does not offer programs of study or courses, but awards competitive, merit-based grants for use toward study and/or research in Germany at any of the accredited German institutions of higher education.

It is a registered association with the German institutions of higher education and students as its members. DAAD activities involve awarding grants and scholarships, promoting German studies and the German language abroad, supporting the internationalization of German universities, assisting developing countries in establishing effective universities, and advising decision-makers on matters of education, culture, and development policy.

DAAD’s motto is “Change through Exchange,” and since its foundation in 1925 by a student in Heidelberg, it has financed more than 2.5 million germans and international students who want to study in Germany.

DAAD derives its budget mainly from the federal funding for various ministries, primarily the German Federal Foreign Office, but also from the European Union and a number of organizations, foreign governments, and enterprises. It maintains contact with and provides advice to its main partner countries on every continent via a network of regional offices and information centers.

It also awards grants to doctoral students, german students, and scholars for studies and research abroad. DAAD is the largest academic grant organisation worldwide with an annual budget of 522 million Euros and supporting approximately 140.000 individuals world-wide. The organisation was founded on 1 January 1925, closed down in 1945, and re-founded again in 1950.

What is the purpose of DAAD?
The DAAD important responsibilities include granting scholarships, strengthening German cultural and language studies abroad, promoting the internationalisation activities of German universities and research organisations, and helping developing countries establish productive higher education institutions.
In the last decades, the DAAD has grown considerably as it now funds about 150,000 people per year. It has an annual budget of half a billion euros and the majority of this money comes from public funds (the Federal Government and the European Union). Nevertheless, the DAAD is independent and not a governmental organization.
In 2020, the DAAD funded more than 110.000 international and German scholars worldwide. The funding offers range from a year abroad for undergraduates to doctoral programs, information gathering visits to assisting with the establishment of new universities abroad, and internships to visiting lectureships. A voluntary, independent selection committee is appointed by the DAAD’s Executive Committee according to certain appointment principles to decide on the funding. The DAAD supports the international activities of German institutions of higher education through publications, the staging of events, marketing services, and training courses.

The DAAD has a headquarter in Bonn (the old capital of Germany) and a branch in Berlin. It also has a worldwide network of:

  • 18 regional offices and 51 information centers (in more than 60 countries), plus
  • approx. 500 DAAD “Lektors” (who teach mainly German language and culture)

Furthermore, DAAD scholarships are not paid back. They usually consist of a monthly scholarship payment and a flat-rate travel allowance(currently, for example,  € 1,200 for doctoral/PhD students and € 861 for graduates). In many cases, DAAD also provides you with health, accident and personal liability insurance. Depending on the scholarship program, there are also additional benefits such as family benefits, a one-off research allowance,  or funds for language courses. Other benefits offered by the respective scholarship programme are all described in the call for applications in the scholarship database.

Before applying for a DAAD scholarship, please read the call for applications for your chosen scholarship programme in the scholarship database, and pay particular attention to application deadlines. The scholarship database directs you to the application portal. Independent and voluntary selection committees review the Scholarship applications and they also decide on the allocation of scholarships. Selection is based on subject-related criteria.
