History

Thomas Jefferson University began as a medical college. The early 19th century was when there were several attempts to create an additional Medical School in Philadelphia were stopped mostly due to University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine alumni. To overcome the opposition, a group of Philadelphia doctors led by George McClellan sent an 1824 letter to the trustees of Jefferson College (now Washington & Jefferson College) located in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, asking for the establishment of a medical school in Philadelphia. The trustees complied and established Jefferson College as the Medical Department of Jefferson College in Philadelphia in 1825. 

In response to a subsequent and third request, The Pennsylvania General Assembly granted an expansion of the Jefferson College’s charter, which was granted in 1826. supporting the establishment of the department and allowing it to issue medical degrees. Additionally, 10, Jefferson College trustees, including Joel Barlow Sutherland, were appointed to oversee the new institution from Philadelphia due to the difficulties of running a medical center located on the other side of the state. Two years afterward, this board was given the authority to oversee the Medical Department, while the Jefferson College trustees maintained veto authority for important decisions.

Undergraduate

Jefferson provides an array of more than forty undergraduate courses that cover a variety of subjects of interest, including Fashion and Textiles, to Architecture, and a range of health-related programs. Athletics

The Jefferson Athletic teams are known under the designation of Rams. The school is part of the Division II level of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and is playing as a part of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) beginning in the academic year 2020-21. The Rams were previously part of CACC’s East Coast Conference (originally called The New York Collegiate Athletic Conference from 1991 to the year 2006) between 1991-92 and 2004-05.

Jefferson provides 17 intercollegiate varsity teams. Men’s sports include basketball, baseball, golf, cross country tennis, soccer, and track & field. For women’s sports, there are basketball and cross country, rowing, golf and lacrosse, softball, tennis, track and field, and volleyball.

The new school decided to keep the name PhilaU, and the athletic department followed the entire institution by employing the brand name “Jefferson” when describing the entire university.

The university is well-known for its basketball team, particularly the men’s, and its coach Herb Magee, who was the most successful male basketball player in NCAA in history, on February 23, 2010, and was admitted into the class of 2010 of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Magee was a head coach of Philadelphia University, highlighted by winning an NCAA Division II Basketball Championship in 1970. Magee received the honorary title of Doctor of Humane Letters by President Stephen Spinelli Jr. at the 125th graduation ceremony of Philadelphia University in 2009. 

The women’s basketball team at the university is managed by the athletic director as well as women’s basketball coach Tom Shirley. Shirley has been the director of athletics at the university since 1992. He has been a winner in 607 games. This puts him at the sixth spot on the NCAA DII lifetime wins list along with 30th place on the NCAA all-divisions coaching career wins list. On January 19, 2011, Shirley took his 600th win when the Rams beat Chestnut Hill College 76-60.

Bob The file was a player with the PhilaU Rams men’s baseball program. In 2006-2007, Philadelphia University started a rowing program with head coach Chris O’Brien. In its first season, it took home the Dad Vail Regatta in the Women’s Novice Heavy Eight.
