History of UAlbany

The university commenced as the New York State Normal School (or Albany Normal School) on May 7, 1844, due to a vote by the State Legislature. Starting with 29 students and four faculty in an abandoned railroad depot on State Street in the heart of the city, the Normal School was the number-one New York State-chartered institution of higher education.

Initially devoted to training New York students as school teachers and administrators, in the early 1890s the “School” had developed into the New York State Normal College at Albany and, with a reformed four-year curriculum in 1905, it became the number one public institution of higher education in New York to be issued the power to award the bachelor’s degree.

UAlbany’s Downtown Campus—was created in 1909 on a site of 4.5 acres (18,000 m2) amid Washington and Western avenues. By 1913, the institution was home to 590 student body and 44 faculty members, provided a master’s degree for the first time, and got a new name—the New York State College for Teachers at Albany. Registration increased to a peak of 1,424 in 1932. By this period, the College for Teachers, or “Albany State” as it was often called for short, had brought in a curriculum similar to those practiced at four-year liberal arts colleges, but it did not forget its primary focus on training teachers.

Reflecting an expanding mission, the College for Teachers modified its name to SUNY College of Education at Albany in 1959. In 1961, the school became a four-year liberal arts college as the State University College at Albany. In 1962, the State University College was termed a doctoral-degree conferring university center. The fresh campus’ first dormitory was inaugurated in 1964, and the initial classes of the academic platform in the fall of 1966. By 1970, enrollment had risen to 13,200, and the faculty about 746. In 1985, the institution added the School of Public Health, a collective effort with the state’s Department of Health.

Around the 1990s, the school built a $3 billion, 450,000-square-foot (42,000 m2) Albany NanoTech complex, expanding the Uptown Campus westward. By 2006, this expansion became home to the College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering, which in 2014 combined with the State University of New York Institute of Technology in Utica, New York, and became an independent SUNY institution: the SUNY Polytechnic Institute.

In 1996, a third campus—the East Campus, was titled the Health Sciences Campus in 2016. In 2005, the school formed a College of Computing and Information, with faculty on both the Uptown and Downtown campuses. In the fall of 2015, the college was hereby replaced, and its programs were incorporated into the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences (CEAS). During the same period, the university created another new college, which is “the College of Emergency Preparedness, Homeland Security and Cybersecurity”.

On June 21, 2017, Dr. Havidan Rodriguez, was appointed the 20th president of the university, a position he assumed in September 2017. Rodríguez became the number one Hispanic/Latino president of the four-year SUNY campuses.
