About the University of British Columbia

The University of British Columbia is a public institution established in 1908, opened in 1915, and located in the Canadian province of British Columbia.

Its the oldest university in British Columbia and it ranks among the top three universities in Canada. The university has an annual research budget of $600 million, and funds over 8,000 projects a year.

Recently, 23 percent of students at the Vancouver campus and around 13 percent at the Okanagan campus were international. The Tuition costs at UBC vary by degree program and are higher for international students. University housing is guaranteed for first-year UBC undergraduates, and newly admitted international students who are second-year undergraduates receive housing priority too. Housing is also available for returning undergraduate and graduate students.

UBC has two main campuses – the Vancouver campus and the Okanagan campus located in Kelowna.

The Vancouver campus is the larger of the two, accommodating more than 85 percent of UBC students. It is at Point Grey, approximately 10 kilometers (6.2 mi) from downtown Vancouver and is close to several beaches, and has views of the North Shore mountains. The Vancouver campus also has two satellite campuses within the City of Vancouver: at Vancouver General Hospital, for the medical sciences, and at Robson Square in downtown Vancouver, for part-time credit and non-credit programs. 

The Okanagan Campus was formerly the North Kelowna Campus of Okanagan University College, next to Kelowna International Airport on the northeast side of Kelowna, British Columbia. It has been completely transformed and is located on unceded land traditionally occupied by the Okanagan Nation.

UBC Okanagan offers 62 undergraduate and 19 graduate programs in a diversity of disciplines including Arts, Science, Fine Arts, Engineering, Nursing, Human Kinetics, Education, Management, Social Work, and Interdisciplinary Graduate Studies. UBC’s Faculty of Medicine delivers medical doctor training through the Southern Medical Program with facilities at UBC Okanagan and a clinical academic campus at Kelowna General Hospital.

In 2017, eight Nobel laureates, 71 Rhodes scholars, 65 Olympians, ten fellows in both the American Academy of Arts & Sciences and the Royal Society, and 208 fellows to the Royal Society of Canada were affiliated with UBC. Also, three Canadian prime ministers, including Canada’s first female prime minister Kim Campbell and current prime minister Justin Trudeau have been educated at UBC.

UBC Outstanding International Student Award 2022

At UBC, academically excellent and outstanding international students are considered for scholarships on getting admission to the University of British Columbia, Canada. 

No separate application is required, candidates will be evaluated on the admission application.

Therefore, you wouldn’t need to apply to UBC to win the Outstanding International Student Award and fulfill your dream to study in Canada. This is because the UBC Outstanding International Student Award is a one-time, merit-based entrance scholarship awarded to qualified students when they are offered admission to UBC. 

However, students selected for this UBC scholarship must show strength academically and display involvement outside of the classroom. 

UBC will start making scholarship decisions in February 2022.

Eligibility

To be considered for a UBC outstanding international student award, you must:

  • be new to UBC, entering directly from secondary school or post-secondary (university or college)
  • be an international student studying at UBC on a Canadian study permit (student visa). (Changes to your citizenship status will affect your scholarship eligibility.)
  • demonstrate outstanding academic achievement and strong extracurricular involvement
  • apply to UBC by January 15
  • All Students commencing studies in the Undergraduate program at UBC are eligible for the OIS.
  • Candidates must hold a Canadian student visa to be eligible.
