The University of California-Santa Barbara, commonly known as UC Santa Barbara or UCSB, is a top-rated public research university founded in 1909 and located in Santa Barbara, California. USCB offers Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral degrees and is renowned for its top programs in sociology, engineering, physics, and history. Its prestigious faculty includes five Nobel laureates. In 1995, UCSB was elected to the acclaimed Association of American Universities (AAU) based on its widely recognized research activity. 

UC Santa Barbara campus has a robotics laboratory, a neuroscience research facility, and seawater laboratories. There’s an exceptional variety of on-campus activities including a Greek community in which roughly 10% of students participate. University of California Santa Barbara GPA Requirements

Many schools specify a minimum GPA requirement, but this is often just the bare minimum to submit an application without immediately getting rejected.

The GPA requirement that really matters is the GPA you need for a real chance of getting in. For this, we look at the school’s average GPA for its current students.

With a GPA of 4.12, UCSB requires you to be at the top of your class. You’ll need nearly straight A’s in all your classes to compete with other applicants. Furthermore, you should be taking hard classes – AP or IB courses – to show that college-level academics is a breeze.

University of California Santa Barbara Admissions

Students from across the United States and around the world are attracted to the University of California, Santa Barbara. At UCSB, undergrads come from more than 100 countries across the world. An international applicant who holds or expects to hold a student, exchange, visitor, or diplomatic visa is welcomed to the UCSB campus. 

Prospective applicants’ secondary school records, GPA, standardized test scores, and application essays are the most important factors considered during admissions. USCB officials will also consider an applicant’s character, extracurricular activities, class rank, state residency, work and volunteer experience, talents, and if the candidate is a first-generation college student.

International students can apply as a freshman or transfer students and must meet the University of California subject requirements at the freshman or transfer level. A freshman applicant is expected to have completed secondary school and have not enrolled at any college or university. On the other hand, a transfer applicant must have completed secondary school and enrolled in a college or university.

Admission requirements for freshman applicants

Freshman applicants are students who have:

  • Completed their secondary education and have earned a certificate of completion which enables them to be admitted to a university in their home country
  • Never been enrolled as a university student

International freshman students must:

  • Complete 15 year-long academic courses with 3.4 GPA:2 years of history (in place of U.S. History, history of your country)
  • 4 years of composition and literature in a language in which you are instructed
  • 3 years (four years recommended) of college-preparatory mathematics that includes the topics covered in elementary and advanced algebra and two- and three-dimensional geometry.* (Approved integrated math courses may be used to fulfill part or all of this requirement)
  • 2 years of college-preparatory science, including or integrating topics that provide fundamental knowledge in two of these three subjects: biology, chemistry, or physics. One year of approved interdisciplinary or earth and space sciences coursework can meet one year of the requirement. Computer Science, Engineering, and Applied Science courses can be used in area D as an additional science (i.e., third year or beyond).
  • 2 years of a second language
  • 1 yearlong course (or 2 semesters) of visual and performing arts
  • 1 additional course from any subject areas above

International freshman applicants must also demonstrate proficiency in English to be considered for admission to any of our campuses.

The required scores are:

  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) examination: Internet-based test (iBT): Minimum score of 80 or better
  • Paper-based test (completed before Oct. 2017): Minimum score of 550 or better 
  • Revised paper-delivered test (completed Oct. 2017 or later): Minimum score of 60 or better
  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS) examination (academic modules): Accepted with a 6.5 or better band score (academic modules)

Regents Scholarship

The prestigious Regents Scholarship Award was established by the Regents of the University of California in 1962 to recognize incoming international and domestic undergraduates with outstanding academic achievement and promise. Currently, the award is $6,000 per year for four years for entering freshmen.

Middle-Class Scholarship

The Middle-Class Scholarship is for undergraduate students whose families incomes are up to $177,000 and a maximum household asset amount of $177,000 to attend the University of California or California State University. Prospective students will need to complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or the California Dream Act Application by March 2nd each year. 

The Middle-Class Scholarship is determined after a student is awarded any Federal Aid, State Aid, and Institutional Aid. Selected applicants are notified by the California Student Aid Commission.
