UT History

In 1931, the private Tampa Junior College was created by Frederic H. Spaulding, the principal of Tampa’s Hillsborough High School, to be one of the first institutions of higher education in the Tampa Bay area. The college started offering a few degree programs. Most of the classes were held in the evening on the Hillsborough High School campus.

Two years later, after the closure of the Tampa Bay Hotel, the school relocated to its current location. The Tampa Bay Hotel is a resort opened in 1891 on six acres of land directly across the Hillsborough River from downtown Tampa by railroad magnate Henry B. Plant. There are 500 guest rooms in the large main building. After initial success, the resort didn’t attract enough visitors to make a profit and was shut down in 1931 with the coming of the Great Depression and the tremendous downturn in tourism. In 1933, Tampa Junior College was moved into the hotel’s facilities.

The move to a much larger facility resulted in Tampa Junior College becoming the University of Tampa (UT). The course offerings were expanded, and Spaulding resigned from his position at Hillsborough High School to run the university completely. In 1941, UT signed a dollar a year 99-year lease on the City of Tampa’s former resort, and the main building was officially renamed Plant Hall. All of the Tampa Bay Hotel property except for the southeast wing Plant Hall was included in the lease, and it also became the location of the Henry B. Plant Museum.

Over the next few decades, the university grew slowly, and became a reputable institution of learning, serving students mostly from the greater Tampa Bay area. In 1951, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) gave the university full accreditation. Though The University of Tampa succeeded academically, it still faced intermittent financial difficulties for some years. These problems started in the mid-1930s when the deepening Great Depression reduced student enrollment and restrained the school’s ability to educate students despite its large campus and Plant Hall’s former hotel rooms being converted into classrooms and offices. Several decades later, Another crisis surfaced that forced a 1974 decision to end the successful University of Tampa Spartans football program because of the school’s inability to afford the cost of competing in NCAA Division I-A football.

In 1986, Bruce Samson, a local businessman, became UT’s president, and he was offered the position because of his background in banking and finance. Samson was able to pay off the school’s $1.4 million annual budget deficit after making some “hard-nosed” decisions, and that included the school-athlete teams’ withdrawal from all NCAA Division I sports. Bruce later left in 1991 to return to private business, and the school fell into financial difficulties again. Due to UT’s refusal to accept enrollment, it fell into serious budget deficits again, and this lead to serious cuts to academic programs and faculty positions. At that period, UT’s future was uncertain, and it was suggested that the cross-town public University of South Florida should take over the University of Tampa.

In 1995, the UT Board of Trustees elected Ronald L. Vaughn as the school’s new president, who was the former dean of UT’s College of Business. His first actions were aimed at thoroughly renovating the campus up-to-date with new dorms. With the goal of raising $70 million in 10 years, Vaughn launched the “Take UT to the Top” campaign and restored the University’s endowment. The campaign was able to raise $83 million, and this successful fund drive was credited with saving and modernizing the university. Additionally, the John H. Sykes family of Tamp made two important contributions – a gift of $10 million in 1997 and another donation of $28 million in 2000. At that time, it was thought to be the largest gift to a Florida university.

The additional funds were used to buy adjacent land to build modern facilities. Since 1998, over $575 million in construction has been completed on campus and additional faculty were also hired. All these enabled UT to expand its student population while maintaining a 17:1 student-faculty ratio. Vaughn’s salary is one of the top 10 mid-sized, private institutions’ salaries because of his efforts in rescuing the university from the financial crisis and increasing enrollment.

If you get a GPA of 3.4, you are expected to be around average in your high school class. You’ll need a combination of A’s and B’s, and very few C’s.
