History

Central Utah Vocational School

UVU was established in the fall of 1941 when the Utah State Vocational Office combined federal work program classes into a single campus in Provo, located west of the campus of Brigham Young University. Then, the school was called the Central Utah Vocational School (CUVS).

Utah Trade Technical Institute

Over the following decades, the school experienced growth which resulted in numerous changes to the school. The school name was changed several times. In 1963, the name was changed to Utah Trade Technical Institute.

Utah Technical College at Provo

In 1967, the school at Provo changed its name to Utah Technical College and was authorized to confer associate degrees for the first time. In 1977, the institution relocated to its present location, at the I-15 junction and University Parkway in Orem. 

Utah Valley Community College

In 1987, the university was renamed again to Utah Valley Community College.

Utah Valley State College

In 1993, the name was changed to UVSC and it started awarding four-year degrees. In February 2007, the Utah legislature approved changing UVSC’s name as a university and the change was effective on July 1, 2008. The university started conferring master’s degrees, although the school still focuses on its two-year degree programs and four-year degree programs.

Utah Valley University

On July 1, 2008, UVSC was renamed UVU, officially becoming a university. In Fall Semester 2018, the Utah System of Higher Education (USHE) ranked UVU the largest university in Utah for the fourth year in a row. There was a student enrollment of 39,931, more than the University of Utah.

UVU has over 3,300 part-time faculty, and over 1,900 full-time faculty, as well as staff, hence the largest employer in Orem.

UVU received accreditation from the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities. Schools, Individual programs, colleges, and departments are certified, accredited, or recognized by 19 accreditation agencies.

In 1976, Vocational accreditation was granted to UVU, and the Utah State Office of Vocational Education renewed it in 1990 and 1995. In December 2006, AACSB accredited the UVU School of Business and the accreditation was maintained in 2011.

Ranking

In 2021, UVU was ranked #369 by a US ranking according to Forbes. In 2022, UVU was ranked #94-#122 amongst Regional Universities West by U.S. News & World Report and #114 in Social Mobility for that region’s universities.

Campus

The university’s main campus is located in Orem. There are satellite campuses in Spanish Fork, Heber City, North Orem, Provo Municipal Airport, and Lehi. The main campus includes 48 buildings and encompasses 228 acres (0.92 km2).

Before 2005, each university building was in the same style of unfinished concrete with every campus major building connected by 9.1 m concourses. UVU grounds have two reflecting ponds on the campus’s west side and a stream that runs through the eastern part. In the middle of the campus is a multi-dimensional fountain.

UVU houses the Utah Community Credit Union Center formerly known as the David O. McKay Events Center. It was built in 1996 with an 8,500-seat capacity for people. A board made up of representatives from UVU, Orem City, and Utah County governs the events center.

Besides campus activities and sporting events, UVU holds community events such as trade shows, major concerts, expos, high school sports tournaments, graduations, family shows, and banquets. In September 2006, a new Digital Learning Center was constructed by the school to replace the Losee Resource Center used as a library. northeast of the Liberal Arts building. Northeast of the Liberal Arts building is the 180,000 square feet “DLC”. It was opened on July 1, 2008. Roberts, Cooper, Simonsen, Associates, and Layton Construction were hired by UVU President William A. Sederburg as the build team for the new Digital Learning Center. Jacob Alspector, an acclaimed New York architect was the lead architect. The $48 million project comprised computer labs, networked computers, a computer reference area, 31 study rooms, a media center, and wireless internet. In 2016, Ira A. Fulton and Mary Lou Fulton’s money was donated to the Library and its name was changed to Fulton Library. 

In Utah, the Futon library is the “greenest” state-owned building. In 2008, due to the library’s energy efficiency, it won two awards from Intermountain Construction magazine.

UVU Med School GPA Requirements

UVU’s average GPA is 3.42.  The school is quite competitive for GPAs.
