Christopher Newport University is a four-year public university formerly founded in 1960 and located on the coast of Virginia, in the city of Newport News.   1. President’s Leadership Program (PLP)

The President’s Leadership Program is for high-achieving students who have shown a passion for engagement while in high school, and who demonstrate leadership potential. Equally, this program uniquely integrates the academic study of leadership, service learning, and personal development.

Eligibility: Enrolling PLP students have an average high school GPA of 4.0 and 1310 SAT (Evidence-Based Reading and Writing and Math) or 27 ACT.

Scholarship Worth: Renewable $1,000 – $10,000 residential CNU scholarships, plus a study abroad scholarship. Students selected to participate in both the President’s Leadership Program and Honors Program only receive one scholarship.

How to Apply: Select “Yes” for PLP interest in the “Academics” section of the Common Application, submit the supplemental essay when prompted and schedule the required interview.

  1. Honors Program

The Honors Program features stimulating interdisciplinary seminar courses and requires at least two Honors inquiries chosen from study abroad. As well as independent research, civic engagement or internships.

Equally important, Honors students are also afforded more academic freedom, with seminar coursework satisfying liberal learning core requirements.

Eligibility: Enrolling Honors students have an average high school GPA of 4.1 and 1340 SAT (Evidence-Based Reading and Writing and Math) or 29 ACT.

Scholarship Worth: Renewable $5,000 – $10,000 residential scholarship, plus a study abroad scholarship. Students selected to participate in both the President’s Leadership Program and Honors Program only receive one scholarship.

RMG Scholars are mentored by Riverside Health System physicians and gain clinical experiences through summer medical rotations, as well as other medical education activities.

Eligibility: Minimum 3.75 cumulative high school GPA and 1310 SAT score (Evidence-Based Reading and Writing and Math) or 28 ACT cumulative score

Scholarship: $2,500 CNU scholarships freshman year, renewable increase to $5,000 annually sophomore through senior year

How to Apply: After being offered admission to CNU, qualified applicants who selected pre-med as their intended field of study will be invited to submit an additional essay about their interest in studying medicine.

Cost of Living and Study at Christopher Newport University

At Christopher Newport, the cost of living is quite affordable as students live in modern residences with all the comforts and conveniences of home.

Most importantly, each room has air conditioning, high-speed internet access, cable and satellite television, electronic access to the room, a microwave, and a mini-fridge or access to the kitchen. As well as a laundry room located in each room.

There are rooms and accommodations in the summer camps, if necessary, for freshmen and transfer students. CNU also handles food requests. 

Christopher Newport University Admission

At Christopher Newport University-CNU, there are three types of admission for new students: Early Decision, Early Action, and Regular Decision.

Also, students transferred from other two-year and four-year institutions around Virginia are welcomed. This means that CNU can accept a transferred student.

Not only does CNU offer traditional, and bachelor’s to master’s five-year degree programs, the university also welcomes candidates from all over the world. For this reason, International students are welcome to apply.

Students who leave the university for one or more academic years must reapply for admission while Non-degree status is for those who wish to take a limited number of classes.
