About Western Washington University

Western Washington University (WWU or Western) is a public university founded in 1893 in Bellingham, Washington. It was formally a state-funded New Whatcom Normal School, before adopting its present name in 1977.

WWU offers several bachelor’s and master’s degrees. In 2019, the student enrollment was 16,142 students, 15,240 were undergraduate students, and 664 were full-time faculty members. Its athletic team is called the Vikings, and they compete in Division II of the National Collegiate Athletic Association.

History

Western was founded in 1886 as the Northwest Normal School, a teachers’ school predominantly for women despite that men also enrolled as well, by Phoebe Judson in Lynden, Washington. Eventually, the school relocated to Bellingham through the efforts of George Judson, and William R. Moultray. on February 24, 1893, Governor John McGraw signed legislation to establish the New Whatcom Normal School. 

In November 1895, construction started on a permanent school building, currently known as Old Main, which is the current administration building. It was designed by famous Seattle architects James Corner & Warren Skillings and was completed in early 1897. However, the building wasn’t opened to students because there were no funds to install lighting, heating, and do other general maintenance, despite not being included in the original contract. In 1899, the first official class, composed of 88 students, entered,

Western Washington University underwent several name changes before using its current name. In 1901, the school’s name was changed to State Normal School at Whatcom to show New Whatcom’s name change. Also, in 1904, the name was changed again to Washington State Normal School at Bellingham when the townships of Fairhaven and Whatcom joined, and later again in 1937, the name was changed to Western Washington College of Education after it became a four-year college. In 1977, the institution was given university status and finally changed to Western Washington State College.

The 1960s period saw rapid growth for Western. The university’s enrollment increased from 3,000 students to over 10,000 in that decade. In 1967, the Fairhaven College of Interdisciplinary Studies was established, with non-traditional education methods used as a model for The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington. Two years later, the Huxley College of the Environment was founded to continue Western’s trend toward establishing “cluster” colleges.

In 1973, the College of Arts and Sciences was founded and divided into the College of Humanities & Social Sciences, the College of Science & Engineering in 2003; the College of Fine and Performing Arts came from several art departments in 1975, and the College of Business and Economics was founded in 1976.

Today, the WWU student body currently has over 16,000 students. The university is the third-largest university in Washington after Washington State University and the University of Washington.

Campus

WWU is located in Bellingham, a city with a population of about 90,000 people, overlooking Bellingham Bay and the San Juan Islands. The university is 140 km north of Seattle, 89 km south of Vancouver, British Columbia, and an hour’s drive from 3,285 m Mount Baker. The university is close to Interstate 5.
