The World Bank Scholarship for Developing Countries 2022 is out again for experienced development professionals to apply and benefit from.

 

World Bank Scholarship 2021

The World Bank scholarship program has facilitated the training of not less than 6000 experienced development professionals. In turn, these professionals have helped transform their countries’ development-wise. The World Bank Group established the program since 1982 with the mission to develop dynamic approaches to capacity development and knowledge sharing in the developed world. it instituted Scholarships for developing countries for this purpose.

World Bank Group invests in education and developing human resources in the developing world for the purpose of promoting economic development and shared prosperity. There are scholarships currently available for graduate studies in development-related fields for mid-career professionals and researchers.

Overview of World Bank

The World Bank, an international financial institution, is a component of the World Bank Group. It is based in Washington, D.C. The institutions that make up the bank are:

  • The International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD), and
  • The International Development Association (IDA).

The bank provides loans to countries of the world for capital projects. Their focus is on developing countries in areas like human development, agriculture, environmental protection, infrastructure, governance. Human development is at the top of their priorities as it is an area that drives others, hence the advent of World Bank Scholarships for developing countries.

World Bank Scholarships for Developing Countries 2022

Presently, there are two sources of scholarship funding from the World Bank, they are:

Joint Japan/World Bank Graduate Program(JJ/WBGSP): This World Bank Scholarships for Developing Countries program is target towards applicants of Masters’s degrees in development-related topics. The applicants must be from developing countries and must have relevant professional experience. In addition, they must also have a history of supporting their countries’ development efforts.

There are 30 preferred programs and 10 partner programs available in JJ/WBGSP. The preferred programs are majorly development. The partner programs are at universities in the US, Europe, Africa, and Japan with economic policy management, task policy, and infrastructure management as key areas of development studied in the scholarship.

Scholars to their countries at the end of the scholarship program and contribute to its social and economic development with their skills.

JJ/WBGSP World Bank Scholarships for developing countries has the following benefits bundled with the scholarship package:

  1. Tuition
  2. Monthly living stipend
  3. Round-trip airfare
  4. Health Insurance
  5. Travel allowance

Are you eligible for the JJ/WBGSP?

JJ/WBGSP adheres strictly to eligibility criteria for applicants with no exceptions. They cannot change once there is an open call for applications. Applicants of JJ/WBGSP World Bank Scholarships for Developing Countries program must meet the following criteria for application:

  1. Must be a national of a World Bank member developing country. List of the countries can be found  here
  2. Not hold dual citizenship of any developed country
  3. Have 3 years or more of recent development-related work experience after earning a Bachelor’s (or equivalent) degree;
  4. He or she must have earned a Bachelor’s degree(or equivalent) at least three (3) years prior to the application deadline date.
  5. Should be employed in development-related work in a paid full- time position at the time of submitting the scholarship application.  However, nationals from countries identified as fragile and conflict states as updated in the applicants Application Guidelines for each call for scholarships will be exempted
  6. Applicant must be in good health
  7. Applicant must be admitted unconditionally (except for funding) to JJ/WBGSP preferred university master’s program for the upcoming year on or before the application deadline. The program must be located outside the applicant’s country of citizenship or residence. An applicant must upload the letter of admission before submitting the application.
  8. Must not be or closely related by blood or adoption to an employee of or Executive Director of World Bank Group.

How to apply for JJ/WBGSP

Preferred Programs

Call for the application to World Bank Scholarships for developing countries JJ/WBGSP preferred programs will end by April 23, 2022. Applicants must read the under listed documents to get acquainted with (i) the instructions and requirements to submit an application, (2) the eligibility criteria applicants must meet and (3) the selection process.

Partnership Program

One must first of all, apply for admission to one or more Partner Master’s Degree Program(s) seeking for World Bank Scholarships for developing countries JJ/WBGSP Partner Program Scholarship. Applicants should make inquiries to the respective universities on how to submit their applications. Each Partner Master’s Degree Program will shortlist candidates eligible for the program. Robert S. McNamara Fellowships Program (RSMFP)

World Bank established RSMFP World Bank Scholarship for developing countries since 1982. World Bank, and the governments of Bangladesh, China, India, Kuwait, Nigeria, Pakistan, Peru, and former Yugoslavia funded it. It has helped PhD candidates from developing countries to carry out researches at foreign institutions. These researches must be in a World Bank member country except for the researcher’s home country or country of residence. The duration is within a period of 6 to 10 months with up to $25,000 worth.

Currently, there is no call for application for this program as it is undergoing restructuring.

World bank has trained many professionals in development-related fields through the World Bank Scholarships for developing countries and they are currently applying their skills in the development of their home countries.
