The Georgia Institute of Technology, commonly referred to as Georgia Tech is a public research university and institute of technology situated in Atlanta, Georgia with satellite campuses in Savannah, Georgia; Metz, France; Athlone, Ireland; Shenzhen, China; and Singapore.

Initially, the school was established in 1885 with the name, Georgia School of Technology as part of Reconstruction plans to build an industrial economy after the Civil War in the Southern United States.

it started by only awarding a mechanical engineering degree. However, the school expanded its curriculum by 1901 with the addition of electrical, civil, and chemical engineering.

The school’s name was changed in 1948 as it evolved from a trade school to a larger and more capable technical institute and research university.

Presently, Georgia Institute of Technology has six colleges and 31 departments/units, with emphasis on science and technology.

The University is widely acclaimed for its degree programs in computer science and engineering.

History of Georgia Institute of Technology

The idea of establishing a technology school in Georgia was introduced in 1865 after the Civil war in the Southern United States. During the post Civil War period, Two prominent people, Major John Fletcher Hanson (an industrialist) and Nathaniel Edwin Harris (a politician and eventually Governor of Georgia) strongly advocated that the Southern United States province needed to improve its technology to compete with the emerging industrial revolution as at that time.

This was necessitated because the American South of that era was mainly populated by agricultural workers and few technical developments were occurring, hence there was a need for a technology school.

The Georgia State Legislature authorized a Harris led committee In 1882 to visit the Northeast to see firsthand how technology schools worked.

The committee returned impressed by the polytechnic educational models they saw at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Worcester County Free Institute of Industrial Science (now Worcester Polytechnic Institute) hence recommended the adaption of the Worcester model, which emphasized a combination of “theory and practice”, the “practice” component including student employment and production of consumer items to generate revenue for the school.

Based on the recommendations of the Harris led committee, on October 13, 1885, The Governor of Georgia, Henry D. McDaniel signed the bill to create and fund the new school.

As a follow up to the signing of the bill to create and fund the then Georgia School of Technology, in 1887, Richard Peters donated to the state of Georgia 4 acres (1.6 ha) of the site of a failed garden suburb called Peters Park.

The Georgia School of Technology finally opened in 1888 with two buildings. One of the buildings (now Tech Tower and administrative headquarters) had classrooms to teach students; The second building featured a shop and had a foundry, forge, boiler room, and engine room. It was designed for students to work and produce goods to sell and fund the school. The two buildings were equal in size to show the importance of teaching both the mind and the hands, though, at the time, there was some disagreement to whether the machine shop should have been used to turn a profit.

Georgia Tech’s Evening School of Commerce began holding classes in 1912. The evening school admitted its first female student in 1917, although the state legislature did not officially authorize attendance by women until 1920. Annie T. Wise became the first female graduate in 1919 and was Georgia Tech’s first female faculty member the following year.
