Teacher Recommendations

Recommendations must come from teachers who taught the applicant in academic disciplines

For engineering applicants, one must come from a math or science teacher. 

An $85 nonrefundable fee is required as part of an application to Columbia University. We are unable to refund the application fee under any circumstances.


All prospective students must apply using the online application. To be eligible for admission, applicants must have earned a bachelor’s degree from an accredited university by the date on which they enroll at the Columbia Graduate School.

Department, doctoral program subcommittee, or free-standing master’s degree program in which you wish to study must be specified in your application. If required, the sub-field of study and the term for which you are applying must be indicated. A complete application includes: 

Applicant must submit all materials directly, not through an agent or third-party vendor, and will be required to attest to the accuracy and authenticity of all information and documents submitted to Columbia University.

#1. Interschool Fellowships

“Institutional aid” are aid managed and awarded by Columbia University as a central entity or independently at each of the University schools. Despite that most institutional aid is managed and awarded independently at each school, there is also institutional aid that is managed centrally. They are called interschool fellowships.

These interschool fellowships are need-based awards that are not restricted to students in one Columbia school or college. The annual amounts of these awards are generally between $1,000 to $5,000 and they are released in two even disbursements, at the start of the fall term and the start of the spring term.


#2. Clifford and Siegfried Upton Scholarship

This scholarship is available to graduate or undergraduate students and aims to benefit the children, adopted children, and step-children of the employees of Boston-based Houghton-Mifflin Company, its subsidiaries, or successor companies. The minimum amount is $1,000 for a school year and increases according to the needs of the candidate.  


#3. George W. Ellis Fellowship

The George W. Ellis Fellowship is for graduate students who are residents of Vermont or who have graduated from an accredited Vermont college or university.


#4. Leta Stetter Hollingsworth Fellowship

The Leta Stetter Hollingsworth Fellowship is available to female graduate students at Columbia who are graduating from or graduated from the University of Nebraska.

#5. Paul Nicholas Scholarship Fund

This scholarship is available to benefit an international male or female student in any area of the University who has attended college or university in Greece.

It is available to graduate or undergraduate students for two years only.
