ESSEC Business School History

Since its founding in 1907, ESSEC has never stopped innovating to meet future challenges. Seven students were enrolled in the initial class, and the first graduation directory was issued in 1926. Students began naming the successive student intakes at the School; the first, in 1937, was named after the pilot Jean Mermoz. 1966: Academic records and an interview were used to determine admission to the School. 1970: Female students are admitted to the school, with an admission exam held in 1972.

1973: ESSEC relocated from avenue d’Assas in Paris to the new town of Cergy-Pontoise. 1981: Cornell University and the Institute of International Hospitality Management collaborate to develop an MBA program in hospitality management (IMHI). 1985: The first Specialised Master’s program, a one-year program for higher education teaching graduates. The apprenticeship scheme is established in 1993. Professor Daniel Tixier establishes the first teaching and research chair in 1986.

ESSEC was the first business school to provide an apprenticeship program to its students. Singapore opened an Asian-Pacific track in 2014. The School began building on its own site at the start of the decade. Three primary thrusts will guide ESSEC’s development: innovation, engagement, and internationalization.

Essec Business school degrees

ESSEC Business School is a French institution of higher education different from, but parallel and connected to the main French public university system. ESSEC is one of the elite academic institutions that admit students through a very competitive admission process. The majority of Essec business school graduates occupy the highest levels of French society. The graduation style is similar to that of Ivy League schools in the United States, C9 League in China, and Oxbridge in the UK, whereby a student who graduates from a grande école is considered the prerequisite credential for any top position in France; whether government, corporate, and administrative.
