Graduate Programs Admission Requirements

Students can be regularly admitted to a graduate college at the University of Kentucky if they meet the minimum requirements of the graduate school and the specific program requirements.

The minimum requirements for graduate school are as follows.

  • Students seeking admission to graduate school must have a high school diploma from a fully accredited US university or recognized foreign institution before the semester for which they are admitted.
  • An accredited US institution is an institution that is accredited by the relevant regional authority (Middle States, New England, North Central, North West, South or West Association of Colleges and Schools). A recognized foreign institution is an institution recognized by the Ministry of Education of that country or a similar agency as a post-secondary institution with an academic degree.
  • The graduate school requires an average grade of 2.75 for bachelor theses and 3.00 for all theses. Individual departments may need higher grades.
  • Submission of assessments for the oral, quantitative, and analytical written parts of the final exam (GRE), unless the chosen program specifies otherwise. The graduate school has no minimum requirements for the GRE score. Individual programs can set certain score requirements and, in some cases, require the extended part of the GRE.
  • International applicants whose native language is not English must either submit a TOEFL assessment (Test for English as a Foreign Language) or an IELTS assessment (International English Language Testing System). The University of Kentucky requires a TOEFL score of 550 (paper-based), 213 (computer-based), or 79 (internet-based). An average minimum band rating of 6.5 is required for IELTS.
  • Domestic applicants (US citizens or resident foreigners) must pay an application fee of $ 65. International applicants must pay a $75 fee.
  • All applications for graduate studies at the University of Kentucky Graduate School must be submitted online.
  • The fee for domestic applicants is $65.00 per application and for international applicants $ 75.00. Please note that the application cannot be submitted without paying this fee.
  • The first step is to set up a new account and set a username and password. A separate account is required for each application: email address, username, and password. Don’t lose this information. You will need it if you want to return to continue an incomplete application or to review a completed application.
  • Students seeking admission to graduate school must have a high school diploma from a fully accredited US university or recognized foreign institution before the semester for which they are admitted.
  • You are asked to upload copies of certificates from all higher education institutions visited and to report cumulative GPAs for each institution to domestic students. For graduate-seeking students, graduate school requires an average grade of at least 2.75 and 3.00 for all graduate work. Individual programs can have higher requirements.
  • In most cases, an official test result (either GRE or GMAT) is required for approval (** see exceptions below). You are asked to report these results yourself in the application (you can also indicate a future date for the test). However, we will also request official results from the registration office.
  • GRE results should be sent to us directly from the Educational Testing Service (ETS). The institutional code for the GRE for UK Graduate School is 1837
  • The results for the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) should be sent to us directly by the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC). The UK Graduate School code is 1837.
  • These ratings are included in your application and compared to self-reported ratings to ensure consistency. The graduate school does not set a minimum score for GRE or GMAT. However, individual programs may have specific requirements, and it is recommended that you contact them directly for more information.
  • Many research training groups also require letters of recommendation. As part of the application, you will be asked to provide contact information for the number of recommendations required for your program. When you provide your referral information, the system contacts each identified person, and their referrals are sent directly to us.
  • For domestic applicants, the graduate school requires applications to be submitted no later than one month before the start of the semester in which the applicant wishes to begin their thesis.

These grants come from various sources, e.g. university scholarship accounts and Research Challenge Trust Funds.

The students must be enrolled in a research training group. Students who have graduated from high school are not eligible to participate. Graduate assistants (TAs, RAs, GAs) who are put on a school test cannot receive a government or non-governmental scholarship
