About Temple University
Temple University (Temple or TU) is a public state-related research university founded in 1884 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It was established by the Baptist minister Russell Conwell and his congregation Grace Baptist Church of Philadelphia. It was renamed the Temple College of Philadelphia on May 12, 1888. History
Grace Baptist Church of Philadelphia founded Martin Luther King Jr. lecturing at Temple University in 1965. In 1884, Temple University was founded by its pastor Russell Conwell, a Yale-educated Boston orator, lawyer, and ordained Baptist minister. He had served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. In 1882, Conwell came to Pennsylvania to lead the Grace Baptist Church of Philadelphia while teaching working class citizens late at night to accommodate their work schedules. These students were taught in the basement of Conwell’s Baptist Temple which was the origin of the university’s name and mascot.
With time, The Grace Baptist Church of Philadelphia became well-known within the North Philadelphia area. A temporary board of trustees handled the rapidly growing formalities associated with the church’s programs. They named Russell H. Conwell president of “The Temple CollegeWhen the board conducted its first meeting.” Within the following months, Grace Baptist Church appointed a new board of trustees, issued stock to raise funds for new teaching facilities, and printed official admissions files. The church employed teachers and provided classrooms, and well-financed the school in its early years. Despite the few resources to support the school, the church and Conwell’s desire was “to use the usual channels to give education to those who were unable to get it”.
Additionally, Conwell used the income from his “Acres of Diamonds” speech to fund Temple to the congregational giving and supporting the college, as a place where busy Philadelphians who work might receive higher education.
In 1888, a charter was granted to Philadelphia to establish “The Temple College of Philadelphia”, but the city refused to grant of the academic degrees authority award. By 1888, the college enrolled nearly 600 students. In 1907, Temple College revised its institutional status and was incorporated as a university. This enhanced Temple in its reputation, professional and graduate programs, overall enrollment, and financial support.
Over time, Temple expanded and the Samaritan Hospital was founded, Garretson Hospitals, Medical School, and Philadelphia Dental College merged with Temple. On December 12, 1907, after the merger, Temple was officially reincorporated as Temple University.
In 1954, Temple University purchased 11 1/2 acres of the adjacent Monument Cemetery and used it for a parking lot and athletic fields. About 8,000 of the 28,000 bodies on the site were claimed by families of the deceased and the rest were moved to a Lawnview Memorial Park unmarked mass grave. The remaining headstones from the cemetery, including Marquis de Lafayette and a monument to George Washington, were used as the Betsy Ross Bridge riprap, some of which can still be seen at low tide.
Since 1965, Temple has been a Pennsylvania state-related university, receiving state funds, and state appropriations, but is independently operated.
