History

After its founding in 1919 by progressive New York educators, it was objected to a mandatory loyalty oath, and for most of its history, the university was called The New School for Social Research. In 2005, the university and each of its colleges were renamed New School University.

In 1933, The New School founded the École libre des Hautes études and the University in Exile as a graduate division to serve as an academic haven for scholars fleeing from Nazi Germany and other adversarial regimes in Europe. In 1934, New York State-chartered the University in Exile, and its name was changed to the Graduate Faculty of Political and Social Science. In 2005, it was finally renamed the New School for Social Research, and the larger institution was renamed The New School.

New School for Social Research Founding

A group of university professors and intellectuals founded The New School for Social Research in 1919 as a free, modern, progressive school where adult students could “seek a clear understanding of the existing order, its origin, growth and present working”. Founders included historians Charles A. Beard and James Harvey Robinson, economist and literary scholar Alvin Johnson, economist Thorstein Veblen, and philosophers Horace M. Kallen and John Dewey. These founders were former professors at Columbia University.

In October 1917, the entire faculty and student body was imposed under a loyalty oath by Columbia University to the United States, and fired several professors. Professor of Political Science, Charles A. Beard, resigned his professorship at Columbia in protest. In 1919, his colleague James Harvey Robinson resigned to join the New School faculty.

The New School planned to offer postgraduate education without degree prerequisites or degree matriculation. It was open to anyone, as the Schools of Public Engagement, the adult division today called remains. For larger groups, New School first classes took lectures followed by discussions, or for “those equipped for specific research”, smaller conferences. In the first semester, the ad hoc faculty offered 100 courses, mostly in economics and politics. The faculty included Charles A. Beard, Thomas Sewall Adams, Horace M. Kallen, Harold Laski, Wesley Clair Mitchell, Thorstein Veblen, Graham Wallas, James Harvey Robinson, Charles B. Davenport, Elsie Clews Parsons, and Roscoe Pound. The New School started to offer degrees in the traditional university model. The subject of Experimental Composition was later pioneered by John Cage.

The New School motto is “To the Living Spirit”. In 1937, it was remarked that a plaque with the inscription “be the Living Spirit” had been torn down by the Nazis from a building at the University of Heidelberg. It was suggested that the inscription be adopted by the University in Exile as its motto, to indicate that the ‘living spirit,’ mortally threatened in Europe, would have a home in the US. The idea was adopted by Alvin Johnson, and the motto still guides the division to this present day.

The intellectual heart of the New School has been University in Exile and its subsequent incarnations. Notable scholars of the University in Exile include Max Wertheimer, and Aron Gurwitsch, psychologists Erich Fromm, political theorists Hannah Arendt and Leo Strauss, and philosopher Hans Jonas.

The École Libre gradually grew to become one of the leading institutions of research in Paris, and the New School maintains close ties with the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales.

Academics

The New School’s Lang College has a “student-directed curriculum,” which is different from most U.S. universities. The school does not require its undergraduates to take general education courses. Instead, students explore before focusing on a major topic that is of interest to them. Only the performing arts is an exception, as students must declare majors at enrollment. Though new students must complete a literary, conservatory, or artistic rigorous core training, students are expected to be the main designers of their own curriculum.

81 degree/diploma programs and majors are offered by the university, with a student: faculty ratio of 9:1. With the small class sizes, The New School is able to teach most of its classes, especially at Eugene Lang College, seminar-style.

New School Acceptance rate

The New School acceptance rate is 83.8%. That means out of every 100 applicants, 84 students are admitted.

The school is very light in its admission process. You stand a good chance of getting into the New School University if you meet or exceed these requirements. Anything less than the minimum GPA and SAT/ACT scores will reduce your chance of getting an admission letter.

The New School Acceptance Rate GPA Requirements

The New School average GPA is 3.37.

If you get a GPA of 3.63, it is okay to be a B-average student with some A’s in your high school transcripts as well. The university accepts below-average students. However, having C’s or D’s won’t be enough to convince the admission committee that you can handle college academics and will therefore slim down your chances of getting in.

However, your GPA will be hard to change in time for college applications if you’re currently a junior or senior.  A school average GPA places you as a below-average student.

SAT and ACT Requirements

Different requirements for standardizing tests are implemented by different schools. The majority of the schools require the SAT or ACT, while others also require SAT subject tests.

Before you submit an application to the New School University, you must take either the SAT or ACT  test. It is very important you perform well in the test to have a strong application.

The New School score choice policy of “Highest Section” is an important part of their testing strategy. It is also known as “superscoring” and you can choose the SAT tests to send. New School admission committee will consider your highest section scores from all the different SAT test dates you submit.

Therefore, students who have a low SAT superscore of below 1130 should retake the SAT. Having a higher score will significantly boost your chances of getting into the New School University.

The New School ACT Requirements

Just like for the SAT, there’s no known hard ACT cutoff mark based on the New School acceptance rate. However, if your score is low, you won’t stand a chance of being admitted.

The New School average ACT score is 26. This score makes the university moderately competitive in terms of ACT scores.

The ACT score 25th percentile ACT score is 24, while the ACT score 75th percentile is at 29.
