About Washington University in St. Louis
WashU or Washington University in St. Louis is a private research university founded in 1853 and located in St. Louis, Missouri, at the heart of Washington University. Its main campus (Danforth) is divided between unincorporated St. Louis County, Clayton, Missouri, and Missouri. Joseph Gibson Hoyt was the university’s first chancellor. In 1853, he secured the university charter from the Missouri General Assembly and was named President of the board of trustees. Though Eliot sought support from members of the local business community, including John O’Fallon, he still failed to secure a permanent endowment. Washington University had not had a prior financial endowment and that is quite unusual among major American universities. No religious organization, a wealthy patron, or the government-backed the institution.
The university bore three different names during the three years following its inception. The first approved name by the board was “Eliot Seminary,” but William Eliot did not want to name a university after himself and he refused the establishment of a seminary, which would be charged with teaching a religious faith. He preferred a nonsectarian university. In 1854, the name was changed to “Washington Institute” by the Board of Trustees in honor of George Washington, and because the charter was coincidentally passed on February 22, the same day of Washington’s state birthday. Naming the university after the U.S’s first president, just seven years before the American Civil War and bitter national division, wasn’t a coincidence. During this time of conflict, George Washington was generally admired by Americans as the father of the United States and a symbol of national unity. The Board of Trustees wanted the university to be a force of unity in a divided Missouri. In 1856, the university name was amended to “Washington University.” In 1976, the university amended its name again when the Board of Trustees decided to add the suffix “in St. Louis” to distinguish the university from the many other universities that bear the same Washington name.

Danforth Campus
Danforth Campus (formerly known as the Hilltop Campus) is the main campus of WashU university mostly between Wydown Boulevard, Forest Park Parkway, North Big Bend Boulevard, and North Skinker Boulevard.
Although the school added “St. Louis” in its name, Brookings Hall and the majority of the school’s main campus is located in St. Louis County and suburban Clayton.

North and West Campuses
Washington University’s North Campus and West Campus are where the administrative functions that are not student-focused are carried out. The North Campus is in St. Louis City, close to the Delmar Loop. You will find other university administrative departments at the North Campus location, including Accounting and Treasury Services, offices for Quadrangle Housing, Parking and Transportation Services, Army ROTC, and Network Technology Services.
The North Campus location is also an off-site storage space for the Performing arts Department while the West Campus is about one mile (1.6 km) west of the Danforth Campus in Clayton, Missouri, and mainly consists of a four-story former department store building with mostly administrative spaces. Today, the basement level is used as the West Campus Library, the University Archives, conference space, and the Modern Graphic History Library. The ground level is used as retail space. Tyson Research Center
Tyson Research Center is a 1,966.5 acres (3.07 sq mi; 795.81 ha) field station situated on the Meramec River, west of St. Louis. Tyson was obtained as surplus property from Washington University by the federal government in 1963. The university used it as a research/education center and biological field station. In 2010, one of the first two buildings accredited nationwide as a “living building” in the Living Learning Center was named under the Living Building Challenge. It was opened to serve as both a classroom for summer students and a biological research station.

Medicine
The Washington University School of Medicine was established in 1891. The 2021 U.S. News & World Report rankings of U.S. medical schools ranked the university #6 for research and 31st for primary care. The McDonnell Genome Institute directed by Richard K. Wilson is located within the Washington University School of Medicine; it is among the three NIH-funded major DNA sequence centers in the U.S. and played an important role in the Human Genome Project.
