1. Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences

The Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences (ACJS) is a membership organization that began in 1943. It started as an association of International Reach, a cross-cultural student public speaking program designed to engage both professional and academic skills and information, in the fields of criminal justice. 

One of their primary agendas is to bolster policy analysis, relevant research, and criminal justice education for both educators and professionals in the fields of criminal justice. ACJS brings together a variety of constituents to continue to shape the organization and its reach, including professionals, scholars, and students, from a variety of fields, all of whom work together to build a common language around social justice, crime, and justice.

The Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences offers an annual award called “The Outstanding Graduate Students Award.” This award honors the scholarly work of a graduate student who is enrolled, or was in the past year, in an accredited graduate program in the fields of Criminology, Criminal Justice, or related programs. The particular theme of their work must connect to victimology, and may be connected through their work in victim services, and victim advocacy.

It can also strictly be a scholarship on victimization or other work that proves a commitment to improving the institutional and cultural response to victimization. The student or candidate must be nominated by a professor who is familiar with their work, and directly following, must submit a CV and supporting statement, no more than 1,000 words in length.

2. Alpha Phi Sigma: The National Criminal Justice Honor Society

Alpha Phi Sigma: The National Criminal Justice Honor Society is a large member organization that has been in existence for 75 years. It has more than 360 chapters around the country, all of which are engaged in providing scholarships in the field of Criminal Justice. 

Alpha Phi Sigma offers the V.A. Leonard Scholarship, named after the founder of the organization. It began offering awards in her name in 1982, to honor the contribution and work of Dr. Leonard to the field of Criminal Justice. One undergraduate and one graduate student will be awarded the scholarship per year, based on their t professional recommendations, transcripts, and extracurricular activities. Applicants must submit a paper titled: My Perception of Alpha Phi Sigma, describing the direction he/she would like to see the organization take in the future, and an additional two-page scholarship on why they think they deserve the scholarship.

3. American Association of Justice

The American Association of Justice, once known as the Association of Trial Lawyers of America (ATLA), provides resources, professional support, a network of peers, and updated information to represent clients. 

The work motivation is to promote a fair, just, and effective system. Even in the most complex situations, their goal is to ensure that anyone that has been harmed can receive justice in the courtrooms of this country. The membership consists of a community of trial lawyers who are committed to the above practices, and principles. It also invests in the role of education to ensure all lawyers are trained in advocacy for all clients.

The American Association of Justice offers the Leesfield/ AAJ Scholarship. It is an annual scholarship designed to give first and second-year law students connected to AAJ, an opportunity to attend AAJ’s annual convention in Boston, MA. The convention is a special opportunity for prospective lawyers to network with others engaged in the fields of Criminal Justice. All applicants must submit a 500-word essay on their commitment to preserving the civil justice system, a resume, and a letter of financial need. Additionally, verification of student status is required, as well as proof that they are enrolled in an ABA-accredited school.

4. American Association of Law Libraries

The American Association of Law Libraries (AALL) is based on the principle that all people are entitled to relevant and timely legal information in order to make educated legal decisions and arguments.  Their membership base consists of highly educated problem solvers and legal information experts like Law Librarians, Judges, Students, Web Content and Materials Managers, Legal Information Managers, Chief Knowledge Officers, Paraprofessionals, Business Intelligence, and many other professionals. Their values include permanent and equitable legal information access and a strong commitment to diversity.

The American Association of Law Libraries offers an annual scholarship opportunity called the George A. Strait Minority Scholarship designed to support minority college graduates who are in pursuit of advanced degrees in the fields of library sciences and law. The award is in the name of the late law library trailblazer George A. Strait and applicants must be interested in a future path of law librarianship and should be able to show evidence of financial need.

5. Association of Certified Fraud Examiners

The Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE) is the world’s largest institution whose main goal is the elimination of all forms of business fraud. They have over 80,000 people in their membership base and they are all committed to making a difference in the reduction of fraud-related crimes globally. 

ACFE offers a variety of education opportunities and anti-fraud training, to bring business minds together in the larger discourse of fraud elimination. The credential of a Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) assumes expertise in the discipline of fraud prevention, deterrence, and detection. Their work entails protecting the global economy by putting in place methods to prevent and intervene in fraud when it occurs.

The Association of Certified Fraud Examiners offers the Ritchie-Jennings Memorial Scholarship Program to four students, who are building a career in the complex field of fraud examination.

The four students will also be given an ACFE student membership for the year and all awards will be paid directly to the recipient’s post-secondary institution. This award was named in honor of two ACFE members Tracy Ritchie and Larry Jennings who were fatally wounded in an act of violence.

Another exciting opportunity offered through the Chicago chapter of the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners is the Dan Sprehe Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship funds 5 students per academic year to take their ACFE Exam prep course, which costs $399. Successful students will be granted full ACFE membership for the Chicago chapter for the course of a year.

6. Brian Terry Scholarship Program

The Brian Terry Foundation was created to honor Agent Terry’s strong work ethic, spirit, and love for his fellow border patrol officers. Agent Brian Terry is a fallen United States Border Patrol Officer. 

This legacy foundation aims to support individuals that have suffered a work-related injury while serving or support border patrol families who have lost a loved one in the line of duty. They aim to raise public awareness on issues affecting border patrol agents and their families.

The Brian Terry Scholarship award is a criminal justice scholarship offered to students who enroll in a criminal justice college program. The foundation relates and prepares students to be leaders in the fields of criminal justice and places a lot of emphasis on the power of education. Students interested in applying must be accepted to attend college or already attending college and in pursuit of an undergraduate degree. Applicants must submit a recent high school or college transcript, and two letters of recommendation from high school or college counselors, educators, or employers. A 1200-word personal essay is also required and applicants must have a minimum of a 3.0 GPA to qualify for the award.

12. Nellie Martin Carman Scholarship Fund

  • Eligibility: Available to graduating seniors from public high schools in King, Pierce, and Snohomish counties in Washington state (must be a US citizen).
