About DAAD
DAAD stands for “German Academic Exchange Service“, a private, federally funded and state-funded, self-governing national agency of the institutions of higher education in Germany. It was founded in 1925 and representing 365 German higher education institutions (100 universities and technical universities, 162 general universities of applied sciences, and 52 colleges of music and art).
The German Academic Exchange Service, or DAAD is the largest German support organisation in the field of international academic co-operation. It does not offer programs of study or courses, but awards competitive, merit-based grants for use toward study and/or research in Germany at any of the accredited German institutions of higher education.
It is a registered association with the German institutions of higher education and students as its members. DAAD activities involve awarding grants and scholarships, promoting German studies and the German language abroad, supporting the internationalization of German universities, assisting developing countries in establishing effective universities, and advising decision-makers on matters of education, culture, and development policy.
DAAD’s motto is “Change through Exchange,” and since its foundation in 1925 by a student in Heidelberg, it has financed more than 2.5 million germans and international students who want to study in Germany.
DAAD derives its budget mainly from the federal funding for various ministries, primarily the German Federal Foreign Office, but also from the European Union and a number of organizations, foreign governments, and enterprises. It maintains contact with and provides advice to its main partner countries on every continent via a network of regional offices and information centers.
It also awards grants to doctoral students, german students, and scholars for studies and research abroad. DAAD is the largest academic grant organisation worldwide with an annual budget of 522 million Euros and supporting approximately 140.000 individuals world-wide. The organisation was founded on 1 January 1925, closed down in 1945, and re-founded again in 1950.
The DAAD has a headquarter in Bonn (the old capital of Germany) and a branch in Berlin. It also has a worldwide network of:
- 18 regional offices and 51 information centers (in more than 60 countries), plus
- approx. 500 DAAD “Lektors” (who teach mainly German language and culture)

The aim of the scholarships in Germany is to produce graduates of responsible character with the necessary knowledge and skills for professional and national leadership.
To achieve this purpose, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) offers a number of scholarship opportunities that allow international students to study in Germany. These scholarships cover a range of postgraduate courses at German Universities.
But while you can apply for scholarships for a development-related course in Germany at little or no cost, the scholarship is limited. DAAD considers only a few students who are eligible for the scholarship and who apply correctly before the application deadline.
Furthermore, DAAD scholarships are not paid back. They usually consist of a monthly scholarship payment and a flat-rate travel allowance(currently, for example, € 1,200 for doctoral/PhD students and € 861 for graduates). In many cases, DAAD also provides you with health, accident and personal liability insurance. Depending on the scholarship program, there are also additional benefits such as family benefits, a one-off research allowance, or funds for language courses. Other benefits offered by the respective scholarship programme are all described in the call for applications in the scholarship database.
Before applying for a DAAD scholarship, please read the call for applications for your chosen scholarship programme in the scholarship database, and pay particular attention to application deadlines. The scholarship database directs you to the application portal. Independent and voluntary selection committees review the Scholarship applications and they also decide on the allocation of scholarships. Selection is based on subject-related criteria.
Yet, don’t despair. If you are a graduate from a developing country who wishes to study in Germany, you can still achieve that dream if you follow the instructions we are providing you.
