About Flagler College

Flagler College is a fully accredited private liberal arts college founded in 1968 in St. Augustine, Florida. It offers 33 undergraduate majors and one master’s program to about 2600 students from 40 states and 43 countries. Its campus is in Tallahassee, on 19 acres of land in the middle of the historical city of Saint Augustine on the Florida Atlantic coast.

History

Flagler was founded in 1968, and the campus comprises 19 acres (77,000 m2) of land, with the heart of it being the Ponce de León Hotel, built-in 1888 as a luxury hotel. The architects were Thomas Hastings, and John Carrere, who worked for Henry Morrison Flagler, an oil magnate, industrialist, and railroad pioneer. It is now listed with the highest designation, a National Historic Landmark.

Lawrence Lewis, Jr., was the brain behind Flagler’s development. It was his vision that the old hotel grounds be used to create a small, private liberal arts college. Lewis was Chairman of Flagler’s board of trustees for over 20 years, and he guided the college through a restructuring in 1971. He directed millions of dollars through personal, foundations, and family funds into new restoration projects, construction projects, endowments, and various other programs to ensure the continued success of Flager college.

In 2014, U.S. News & World Report college survey ranked Flagler College eighth among regional colleges in the South. But in February 2014, the college’s vice president of enrollment management resigned after it was concluded that he had been changing student GPAs, test scores, and student rankings to build up the college’s image, standing, and reputation. The Jacksonville law firm was hired by the college to investigate. The report showed that since 2004 the college had been reporting false information to various organizations, including the U.S. Department of Education and many other ranking organizations.

Proctor Library

Flagler’s sole library facility is known as The Proctor Library, located at 44 Sevilla Street. It is named after William L. Proctor, Flagler’s chancellor, and Flagler’s president from 1971 until 2001. The Proctor Library’s architectural design is similar to the many of the historic buildings on campus and reflects the Gilded Age style well known during the 1888 Henry Flagler’s construction of the Ponce de León Hotel.  In 1996, The Proctor Library was built and replaced the demolished home of artist Felix de Crano, which had been St. Augustine’s last classic Shingle Style house.

The library’s collection contains about 102,047 printed volumes, 4,180 audiovisual items, 212,689 electronic books, 630 periodicals, 5 newspapers, almost 44,000 full-text electronic periodicals, and 50 online databases. There are also threw collections in the Proctor Library: Flagler College Archives, Digital Collections, and Special Collections. Only Flagler College students, staff, and facility have access to, and the use of, the Proctor Library. It is not open to the general public without a written request. However, the Proctor Library Digital Collections is accessible to anyone with an Internet connection.

Organizations

Flagler membership is available in 11 honor societies, including Alpha Chi, Alpha Phi Sigma, Alpha Psi Omega, Sigma Beta Delta, Pi Sigma Alpha, Omicron Delta Kappa, Kappa Delta Pi, Phi Alpha Theta, Psi Chi, Alpha Kappa Delta, and Sigma Tau Delta. In addition, there are 3 student organizations, 9 academic organizations, 30 campus clubs, 6 sports clubs, club hockey, a men’s lacrosse club, a dance club, a men’s soccer club, a Quidditch team, and a winter guard.

Newspaper

The college’s student-run newspaper is the Gargoyle. It only went online in 2010. The Gargoyle was first place at the 2012 Society of Professional Journalists Mark of Excellence Region 3 awards, for best independent online publication and editor Michael Newberger first place for online opinion writing, and Mari Pothier, sports editor in online sports reporting.

Since it is only online-only, The Gargoyle has published additional three Flagler Communication Department classes and won nine Regional Mark of Excellence awards. Before 2010, the publication had only won additional two SPJ awards. In 2007, the publication was among the Associated Collegiate Press Pacemaker Awards finalists.

In 2006 and 2007, there were several allegations of Gargoyle’s alteration of articles by the college administration. In 2006, an alleged error in its publication headlines about rising tuition resulted in the newspaper being removed from circulation. In April 2007, the college administration gained editorial control over the paper again because of other supposed factual errors. Students came together and protested against any censorship of the newspaper, and for an independent student press.

After September 2007, communication majors did not require working on The Gargoyle. The Gargoyle was assigned an advisory board and given operating guidelines.

Athletics

Flagler athletic teams are known as the Saints. The college is part of the Division II level of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), competing mostly in the Peach Belt Conference (PBC) between the 2009 – 2010 academic years.  From 2006–07 to 2008–09, the Saints previously competed as an NCAA D-II Independent. From 1990–91 to 2005–06, the Saints also competed in the Florida Sun Conference of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).

The total number of intercollegiate varsity sports Flagler competes in is 19. The Men’s sports include basketball, baseball, cross country, golf, lacrosse, tennis and track & field (indoor), and soccer, while the women’s sports are basketball, golf, soccer, cross country, lacrosse, track & field (indoor), softball, tennis, and volleyball. The two-spirit squad teams are cheerleading and pep band.

Volleyball

In 2009 the Flagler College Lady Saints volleyball team reached the national championship and finished in the United States’ top four Division II volleyball teams. In 2010, the Lady Saints reached the regional finals and finished top 16 in the nation.
